pantanap (781), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 27, 2008 tap at GI clybourn....very porter-like in appearance. dark brown cola with a dissipating light brown head....sour fruits with some grassiness make up the nose....some sour tart fruits and light bitter earthiness contribute to the flavors can’t say that this is very saison-iike at all but still glad to have tried it.
Ughsmash (3071), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 13, 2008 On tap at Goose Clybourn. Poured deep reddish-brown with a very well-retained cap of beige head. The aroma was sweet and bright with some pine bitterness over primarily caramel and some semi-sweet chocolate.. didn’t do much for me. The flavor did even less for me.. drier light fruit and caramel sweetness with spicy pepper and clove on the edges.. finished spicy as well.. the malts & yeast used here did not play well together. Oddly bitter and not very well balanced on the palate.. bit dry. JPDIPSO (4267), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Jun 30, 2008 Dark brown with a light tan head. Scents of dark fruit and black malts. Flavors of chocolate, a bit of spice, some tart fruit and earthiness work their way into the flavors. Seems to hit the norm in belgian blacks as of late. NobleSquirrel (683), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 22, 2008 On tap at GI Clybourn. To me, I felt like this was a very dynamic beer. It had a lot of fruit character mixed in with the acrid sort of charred notes. distinctly black tasting with a nice spicy/tart background. Pours black and thin head, nice nose of strawberries and tropical fruit. Very nice. heemer77 (3771), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jun 17, 2008 On tap at the GI Clyborn brewpub. the body was dark chesnut brown. The aroma was woody with some caramel and chocolate. The taste was oak with some black tea. There was also some hay type notes in the finish. To me, it tasted like a weaker dry Schwarzbier, made with saison yeast, but then fermented at too low a temperature for the saison character to really kick in.
