hopscotch (4433), Vero Beach, Florida, USA May 15, 2008 Draft… DLD’08… Tar black ale with a mid-sized, creamy, well-tanned head. Good retention. Chocolate and molasses aroma. Full-bodied and chewy with soft carbonation. Robust… with balance. Sweet chocolate and bitter charcoal. Not a whole lot of heat. Finishes bittersweet (more bitter than sweet) with burnt chocolate and molasses. Cornfield (4255), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Mar 5, 2006 Very well crafted beer, nearly black with a creamy light brown head. The aroma is a blending of roasted barley, dark caramel, milk chocolate, alcohol, oak, molasses, and dark dried fruits. The creamy drink opens the aroma into a complex taste of all the above along with coffee, anise, more alcohol, and a slight Bourbon flavoring. Nice slightly bitter finish. Well done.

JPDIPSO (4210), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Mar 22, 2008 Listed at 8%. Near black with a tall frothy hot chocolate looking head. Somewhat green aroma with light malt, light fruit and herbal hops. Very smooth feel. Fairly tame in flavor. Some fruit and hazelnuts, but no big roasted malt character. For some reason this reminds me of the latest stouts out of belgium (without the yeast funk). Quite drinkable, but just does nothing for the stout lover in me. BBB63 (3767), La Porte, Indiana, USA Jan 11, 2004 Cask conditioned: Deep brown hue with garnet highlights that produce a creamy tan head and good lace. The aroma hints of hazelnut, molasses, caramel, raisins, plums, burnt wood, aromatic hops, and zesty yeast esters. The taste is full of chocolate, nuts, and fruit. A light touch of chalky smoke, musty wood, and light bitter hops adds to the finish of this very dangerously smooth brew. The mouthfeel is a touch thinner than one would have liked and the chalky nature stays around a bit too long. The bartender says the ABV was 8 or 9% on this brew, wasn't completely sure, whatever, it is fully masked. Despite some of the flaws, this is still a good Imperial Stout and worth the drive into Chitown for one while it lasts. Ughsmash (2958), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Feb 10, 2006 Cask @ G.I. Clybourn. Poured a very deep brown with a perfect 1" creamy beige head. Rich, full aroma of roasty chocolate, currants, and licorice. Roasty darker chocolates, medium strength coffee, and floral hoppage in the flavor... hint of whiskey bite at the finish and warming going down. Velvety smooth and well-balanced on the palate.. mild floral and coffee bitterness at the finish. Lighter-bodied for the style. Excellent brew... really enjoyed the cask treatment, too!
