Commercial Description:
Dunkelweizen translates from German to mean dark wheat. Gordon Biersch Dunkelweizen highlights the undertones of dark roasted malted wheat and the unique flavors produced by our special Hefeweizen yeast strain. Our Dunkelweizen adheres to all of the traditions of the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law of 1516) and is naturally carbonated.

Banana with a hint of caramel and vanilla smell with a lot of grain malt aroma. Hazy light brown color with aapplejuice hue and can not see the action. Grainy wheat and barley malt taste with a hint of banana, bubblegum, and vanilla flavor. Light bodied, rich with a hint of a buttery feel, and has lively soft carbonation. A good toasted grainy wheat and barley session beer, yummy.

7/15/08 From the bottle. Aroma is classic wheat grainy with slight wheat sourness, a little additional bready roast character, light peppery phenolics, and sweet banana. Appearance is hazy brown with a very well maintained cream colored head. Flavor is biting and peppery, with a very good sweet/sour malt balance that has lots of banana character. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, with a medium carb feel. Overall, there’s pretty impressive complexity here, but is a bit too strong on the banana at times. Still, not a huge complaint.

One of the best American Wheats I have tasted. Not as good as the German Dunkelweizen, but certainly better then almost any wheat beer available over here. I would disagree with the comment above, this is a beer to seek out although you will have to go to a brewery to find it. This beer has a nice texture, pleasing on the tongue, with a standard dunkelweise appearence (like a German Hefeweizen with a light newcastle color). It was a little strong on the palate, but certainly one of the best, if not the best beer that Gordon Biersch makes.

12 oz bottle. Pours a cloudy dark amber body with a huge frothy beige head that retained forever. Dark over-ripe banana nose with some light chocolate, fluffy yeast, and earthy wheat. Banana bread in a glass. The flavor is much the same, sweet crusty banana bread with some vanilla on the finish. Some light alcohol, cocoa, maybe a touch of nuttiness like black walnuts. Mouthfeel is soft and creamy with nice gentle carbonation. The was surprisingly good. For the price, this would be a nice go-to Fall beer.

Draft at Gordon Biersch at the SFO airport! Excellent on draft! Nose of banana, cloves, and bready yeast. Murky red-amber with a big off hwite glass lacing head, the color and murkiness looks like tomato juice was added, but not! Flavor is caramel, banana, and a tiny bit of hop bitterness. Good thing I walked around the terminal while I had to wait three hours even if it was a 7:30 AM breakfast beer.

On tap at GB in Palo Alto. Decent stuff. The appearance is a little off-putting with more purple haze than an Amsterdam coffee shop. Brownish-purple overall, and yes, it’s hazy. Off-white head. Wheat, yeast, banana, clove, and malts on the aroma. Same on the taste, highly phenolic and pretty sweet with spices thrown in there (or so it seems - I know they claim this conforms to the Reinheitsgebot). Smooth palate and a sweet finish.

Brown body with thick head. Banana flavors, reminded me of runts, some marshmellows, great flavor overall. Aroma was tarter than the flavor, but I really liked the overall feel of this.

Heavy banana on the nose and tongue. Malty sweet finish. Lackluster palate and complexity compared to the great German Dunkelweizens. For a larger brewery and price this is an excellent offering from Gordon Biersch.
