Pours a deep brown with a tan head. Light roasted aroma with little else to the aroma. Flavor has a nice roasted taste with a coffe like finish.

VA Beach location. Deep brown. Faint coffee aroma. Strong coffee flavor. A touch of a carbonic bite. Not bad, sort of a desert schwarz.

The beer from the tap a deep brown to black with nice ruby highlights, the head a perfect two fingers, creamy tan in color, evaporates slowly, leaving a thick sheet of lace to obfuscate the glass. Nose has a toasted grain aroma, sweet with hints of smoke, caramel, maybe a licorice like tone, mouthwatering. Front has a splendid toasted malt presence, sweet with a delectable hop spicy bite at the back. Finish pleasantly acidic, hops spicy and delightful, dry lingering aftertaste, a great representative to the style.

Draught at Colorado Springs Airport. Pours black with brown highlights and an average, foamy, light brown head, somewhat lasting, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, chocolate, nutty), light hops (herbs), average yeast (dough) with notes of dust and paper. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness; roasted light chocolate malt flavor with a tingling carbonation at the end.

Originally received a 4 from me on 7/13/05. Washington, DC location. Deep dark rubied black. Roasted coffee and some powdered cocoa. Roasty feel and flavor. Watery mouthfeel. Looks heavy, but tastes light. Dry aftertaste. Enjoyable.

This was probably the best of the sampler. A black apperance with a reddish hue. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, and licorice. The flavor is quite roasty with some chocolate and coffee. The finish is rather dry. Overall this wasn’t bad at all.

Had this one on draught as part of a sampler flight at the brewpub in Bollingbrook, Illinois. Clear, dark brown pour with a thick, eggshell white pour, very malty nose and a bit smokey, slightly sweet and very malty, good.

Has this on tap at the Virginia Beach location. Black with hints of red when held up to the light with a tan head to it. Aroma is a light roasted flavor with some nutty notes as well as a touch of charcoal. Upon first sip all is much the same but in addition to the roasted flavor there is a slight sweetness that the nose cannot pick up. Pretty good... like a porter on training wheels.
