On tap, DC location, 2006 RBSG pubcrawl. Pours a dark brown, similar to cola, under a small fizzy off-white head. Aroma is roasty with a little chocolate malt and light coffee. Flavor is nicely chocolaty and dry with a little coffee on the finish. Mouthfeel is fairly thin with a watery fizzy texture. A pretty good Schwarzbier, dry and crisp flavor and refreshingly light. A very good choice for a steaming hot summer day.

This is actually one of the better beers I have tried from GB. Soft nose, creamy and roasty, with some smooth chocolate and caramel, a bit of coffee and licorice. Just the right bit of bitterness, sour and roast. Well done.

Draft at the Washington DC brewpub, 5/5/06: Pitch black (duh). Almost a stouty roastiness with a bit of a tart side. Good.

On tap at the Tempe, AZ location. Roasted nose with some anise that is pretty apparent. Some chocolate is also faintly present with a soft lager yeastiness in the nose. Mildly hazy mohaogany body with nice off-whitish head and fair lacing. Creamy, sweet chocolate/caramel flavors to start, which turns more roasted with a little bitterness and some anise/licorice in the finish. A good schwarzbier.

On tap at the San Francisco brewpub. Dark brown with garnet undertones. The off-white medium sized head lasts OK in the glass. Has an odd, earthy aroma. Perhaps a little licorice as well. Odd slightly sour chemical flavor. Thin body. Medium sweetness. Weird off flavors just make this tough to drink.

(Miami) Draft. Poured dark brown with a average frothy off-white head that diminished slowly. Good toasted malt aroma. Medium body. Solid sweet roasted malt flavor with a smooth light bitter finish. Solid brew.

Tap in DC. Black pour with white head. Almost no aroma. A very watery taste complemented by a clean coffee finish

Sweet finish, malty flavor deep rich dark amber color. Frothy head lasts about 5 minutes. Rasin and coffee hints. g
