On tap at the Rockville location: Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a clingy-lacing froth of off-white head. Aroma of lightly sweet toasty dark caramel and roasted malt and earthy hops. Starts with a creamy fullness and some semi-sweet roasty dark malt with decent German hop balance before a bittersweet finish with some lingering roastiness. A pretty decent Schwarzbier.

True to its name, black fading to brown near the surface. Dark and smooth, but a tad watery. Aroma nearly absent, just a hint of sweet maltiness. Smoky notes cut through the mild hop bitterness; the brew was otherwise quite dry. Enjoyable with food, though I don’t think it could have held up so well on its own.

Nice dark black foams up a nice head from the tap. Aroma of roasted coffee, caramel, and a touch of chocolate. A very smooth, light bodied beer that goes down very well, a bit to well for my taste. My only complaint is that the palate is a bit too light.

Actually had on-tap at the GB brewpub in Seattle. A: Large, tan head that diminished to about 1/2-finger or so. Body is virtually black and opaque... probably clear, but difficult to tell because the color is so dark. S: Like the hefe, the aroma is a little weak... some roasted malt in there, but that’s all I got. T: Very smooth, with roasted malts and light amounts of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Very nice. M: Light-bodied, with a creamy texture and average carbonation. D: Very easy drinking... the dark color may scare some away who aren’t familiar with the style, but they should really give it a try. A good sipping beer.

Pours and espresso brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Chestnuts, cocoa powder, roasted malt. Smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel. Bit soapy. Medium weight. Not bad
