Commercial Description:
In the 11th century, Bavarian monks brewed large vats of a strong, dark-flavored malt to help sustain themselves during periods of fasting. Its creaminess, combined with just a gentle hint of sweetness, was so well received, the monks actually began to fast more and more often.
Today, the tradition of their Winter Bock lives on. But only through January. So come in to a Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant and order up this full-bodied, dark Winter Bock. It tastes great with all the seasonal favorites on our menu. Or just fine all by itself.

On Tap in Glendale AZ before the Fiesta Bowl 2007. Pours out a red/brown topped with a small head. An aroma and tast of sweet malt. Not bad.

Fairly alright, but not really that warming for a winter beer. A selection with hops might have been a lot better.

12 oz bottle. Lot’s of sweet malty aromas. Similar on the flavor. Decent Dopple bock like flavors. Not too bad. but not the best.

Drat at the Virginia Beach location. Dark reddish brown with a thin beige head. Sweet toffee and malt nose. More of the same in the flavor, plus a wisp of smoke. OK, but not that exciting.

Malty, caramel, bready notes in the nose. No off aromas and no sulphur. Pours dark amber with rich amber-brown hoghlights. Nice off white creamy head with good retention (lace on the glass). Malty sweet up front with melanoidin like notes mid tongue. Finish is clean and dry (not unpleasing). Rich malt flavors with caramel, dark fruit and bready notes throughout taste. Good carbonation with nice mouthfeel. Slight warming from alcohol. Very enjoyable offering from Columbus Ohio GB brewery! Wonder how the Columbus version compares to those from other GB breweries throughout country. Bottle products come from different brewery and are no where near the quality of the fresh Columbus GB product!

Pours a gorgeous mahogany with a thin off white head which dissipated quickly Caramelly, some dried fruits and a little bit of chocolate in the nose. Clean lager like with no hop aroma Flavors echo the aroma with a rich malt complexity including caramel, some nuttiness and a little melanoidin dark fruits with a restrained spicy hop bittterness Medium-light bodied with medium carbonation Overall: Not too bad for a doppelbock. when compared to the celbrator the malt complexity is less interesting and I seem to pick up a slight metallic taste as the beer warms up Note: Having tried Trade Joe’s Winterfest (brewed by GB) I can say I like this one much better

From a 12 oz. bottle with a short blurb and bottling date on the back label, 10.04.06, and along the left side of front label states it was brewed at the San Jose brewery. Poured a clear, doppelbock ruby hued mahogany with a fluffy, creamy white head that settled into a thin sudsy lacing, small amount of ringed sticking. Aromas of plums and purple grapes, a subtle caramel, a bit nutty, a slight spiciness and a fruity alcohol. Good, even, light carbonation and a malty crisp, smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel. Tastes of purple grapes, caramelized malts, a subtle nutty toffee, a grainy metallic, spicy, lightly grassy hop, a soft solvent alcohol flavor and a fruity, metallic malty finish. A nice, drinkability doppelbock, a good seasonal, well worth trying.

Not to shabby slightly metallic taste however, which did bother me at the end...
