Commercial Description:
In the 11th century, Bavarian monks brewed large vats of a strong, dark-flavored malt to help sustain themselves during periods of fasting. Its creaminess, combined with just a gentle hint of sweetness, was so well received, the monks actually began to fast more and more often.
Today, the tradition of their Winter Bock lives on. But only through January. So come in to a Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant and order up this full-bodied, dark Winter Bock. It tastes great with all the seasonal favorites on our menu. Or just fine all by itself.

12 oz bottle. Poured a clear copper color with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet and caramely, maybe just a hint of smoke too. Taste is all malty sweetness. Duane is right, there was something in the finish that just didnt seem quite right, but all around a decent bock.

12 oz. bottle from OhioDad, thanks Scott.
reddish brown in color with a fast fading tan head. aroma reminds me of a gooey caramel roll. flavor is malty sweet with some caramel and a hint of chocolate. a rather strange tartness on the finish detracts just a bit from an otherwise enjoyable bock.

Dark purple color with no real head. Sweet, smokey, dark candi aroma. This is nicely done. All the flavors mix well together with nothing dominating. A little light in the body but otherwise very nice.

Dopple bocks have often been called "liquid bread" and that is a very apt descriptor. These beers are rich, delicious, sweet malty and warming brews. Gordon Bierch pays tribute to this tradition, and their version is true to their German inspiration. Gordon Biersch WinterBock pours to a beautiful, deep brown, almost black color with a creamy tan head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is wonderful, with very deep toasty and sweet malty aromas. The palate is rich and delicious with more sweet malt, toasty, and nutty flavors. The mouth feel is very full and slick on the tongue as it slides down the throat. This beer finishes with more wonderful big sweet malty and toasty flavors, and ends with a soothing, warming, alcohol burn. This is a very impressive example of German dopple bock, from a brewpub chain that specializes in German beer styles. I tried a number of dopple bocks on a recent trip to Germany, and this beer fairs well against the Bavarian classics. I have found the DC location of Gordon Biersch to be doing an outstanding job, and I have never had a beer here that I have not been impressed with.

Bottle... Clear, copper lager with a small, creamy, beige head. Malty aroma with notes of caramel, dark raisins and light molasses. Rich, malty flavor. Medium sweet and very caramely. Medium to full-bodied and creamy with medium carbonation. Finishes bittersweet and a little chocolaty. Thanks go out to DarkElf for sending the bottle!

01.18.06 12oz bottle thanks to DarkElf. The label of this beer says 7.5%...hmm...and there is a Trader Joe’s double bock brewed by Gordon Beirsch that is 7.5%. That’s probably what this beer is, or not. The beer is a dark root beer brown with a sturdy beige head that fades quickly to a ring. Aroma is sweet, nutty, slightly vinous, lots of raisin and prune, and some hints of smoke. The beer itself is quite sweet, maybe too sweet, but there’s an addictive background toasted nut something or other that makes me want to just pound the whole glass. Body is creamy and soft but maybe a bit thin, not quite holding up to the burst of booziness. Quirks aside, it’s a fine but average brew.

Tap @ Raleigh’s. Dark brown with absolutely no head. Sweet, malty flavor with a bit of alcohol. Medium bodied, fairly flat, with a decent flavor.

Pours a dark brownwith very little head. This is a full-bodied beer with a malty caramel taste. This is a beer that can be thoroughly enjoyed and stands on it’s own.
