Commercial Description:
In the 11th century, Bavarian monks brewed large vats of a strong, dark-flavored malt to help sustain themselves during periods of fasting. Its creaminess, combined with just a gentle hint of sweetness, was so well received, the monks actually began to fast more and more often.
Today, the tradition of their Winter Bock lives on. But only through January. So come in to a Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant and order up this full-bodied, dark Winter Bock. It tastes great with all the seasonal favorites on our menu. Or just fine all by itself.

Bottle. Clear medium-dark brown pour with decent off-white head. Brown sugar and caramel malts are pretty dominant here. Not much else going on. Decent I’d you want something sweet, I guess.

bottled on 11/5/08 consumed 12/18/08.

pours clear but rich... fairly dark auburn brown with a soft tannish head and random lace spots. lots of fruit in the nose... bananas, stone fruit and vinous/red wine along with some brown sugar and nuttiness. the palate is a bit harsh/rough... luckily, or in my case not, there’s a bunch of molasses and caramely sweetness to help smooth it out. flavors of grain, more fruit and a touch of smokiness with a dry spicy finish. the alcohol gets floral and hot as it warms. medium body with a slick buttery mouth feel. there’s a substance to the body which reminds me of chestnut flour/starch.

not bad. though a bit syrupy, hot and uninspiring. 7/3/5/3/13/3.1

Tap at the Glendale AZ brewery. Dark brown and heavily filtered. Nose of chocolates and malts. Taste comes off bitter, then the nice maltiness and chocolates come through. Body is light at first but firms up as it warms. Alcohol certainly is evident. Nice drinkable beer.

Dark brown beer with a large off-white head. Caramel and brown sugar aroma. Lightly fruity with more caramel in the flavor. Full bodied. Decent.
