Commercial Description:
In the 11th century, Bavarian monks brewed large vats of a strong, dark-flavored malt to help sustain themselves during periods of fasting. Its creaminess, combined with just a gentle hint of sweetness, was so well received, the monks actually began to fast more and more often.
Today, the tradition of their Winter Bock lives on. But only through January. So come in to a Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant and order up this full-bodied, dark Winter Bock. It tastes great with all the seasonal favorites on our menu. Or just fine all by itself.

Bottle, bottled on 10/21/08, so just a mere week before consumption. Light brown / reddish pour with some beige head. Aroma is sweet malt, some candy sugar, and german malt. Flavor definitely reflects the candy sugar sweetness, german sweet and bready malt. Sort of seems like a mix between a belgian and a german beer.

Found this single bottle at Safeway in Eureka priced a t $1.49. Bottle looked like it had been there a while. Poured a nice dark brown with tan head and good lacing. Nose of roasted malts and ripe fruit. Smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is nutty caramel malts with a long sweet finish.

Dark brown with thin head. Aroma of light caramel and a little banana. Taste is toasted malt and fusel alcohol. Not sweet at all. Really quite awful. The bartender told me this would be very similar to Guiness. That’s just funny.

Beer poured nicely out of the bottle. The aroma had a hint of a "vinegary" smell. It was not that appealing. The taste was better than the aroma. It had a nice malty flavor with a slight sweet after taste. I was not aware that the beer was 7.5%. It hid the alcohol nicely. Overall, not Gordon Biersch’s best but OK.

Seasonal draught at brewery. Dark brown colour with a small foamy tan head. Nice aroma of sweet caramel malt. Crisp, clean mouthfeel with a nice balanced flavour. Nice for winter but make sure it’s served at the correct temperature and not too cold.

Pours a dark brown, decent head that left a nice layer of foam, but little lacing. Pleasantly sweet aroma of malts with some caramel. Flavors were stronger, and also had some dark cherries and a touch of chocolate. Smooth, just a bit creamy, fairly full-bodied, this seems to live up to what a bock is supposed to be. Nice find in the supermarket.
