Commercial Description:
In the 11th century, Bavarian monks brewed large vats of a strong, dark-flavored malt to help sustain themselves during periods of fasting. Its creaminess, combined with just a gentle hint of sweetness, was so well received, the monks actually began to fast more and more often.
Today, the tradition of their Winter Bock lives on. But only through January. So come in to a Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant and order up this full-bodied, dark Winter Bock. It tastes great with all the seasonal favorites on our menu. Or just fine all by itself.

Poured foamy, and appears almost opaque, deep brown with a touch of gold. Scent is of cherries & alcohol. Tastes of candy sugar & cherries (like the inside of a chocolate covered cherry), with a nice slight dark chocolate tartness towards the end, then a subtly dry hops without which this beer might be undrinkable. Very slight roasted flavors, less than many other dopplebocks. I enjoyed this, but I like sweetness in beers. A good American dopplebock. If you like such beers, you should try it.

I’m starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel of winter beers so here goes. Cloudy brown in the glass, looks thin on the pour, quickly disappearing khaki head. Aroma of cherry, roasted malts, apricot. Inoffensive taste of cherry, chocolate, nuts, brown sugar, roasted stuff. Light to medium body, balanced mouthfeel, smooth finish.

My first dunkler bock, it does have a slightly cheap lager smell but the taste is decent. Roasted malts and charred molasses. Very little head, no bitterness. bottle from mollie stones in palo alto, oct 07

A decent winter brew. Call it a double bock but it really isnt up to that standard. Aroma is sweet. Appearance is dark but has little head. Mouthfeel is the best part as it goes down very smooth, which is suprising for a winter brew. Flavor lacks much punch though.

Pour is clear medium dark amber with a decent off-white head which disappears quickly. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of fruit and caramel. Flavors of smoke, roasted malt, and caramel. Not bad.

I was hesitant to try this as i am not a fan of Gordon Biersch brews. I was wrong on this one. This was a solid top to bottom brew. Pours a darker color than i thought with a nice solid foam head. The smell was slightly weak of anything noticable other than the alcohol. The taste and drinkability were both very good. I was caught off guard by this one and enjoyed it.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel. While the flavor is sweet malty with dominating notes of caramel, but also lighter notes of metal and prunes.
