Commercial Description:
Gordon Scotch Ale was born in the limpid highlands among isolated lochs and haunting Scottish castles. This brown beer, reminiscent of a dark ruby, is full of contrast - both strong and smooth. Its creamy head is delectation for the palate. This unique nectar can also be discovered under the name of Douglas Scotch Ale. Has been renamed 'Finest Scotch' in 2006.

Pours a clear amber color with a thick, creamy, off-white head. Fruity aroma of artificial peach, caramel, honey and some flowers. Very sweet flavor with brown sugar and caramel. Decent lively carbonation and a sweet long finish. A bit too sweet for my taste, but a decent brew.

Bottle from Utobeer market stall. Poured into the Gordon’s thistle glass. Pours a clear chestnut brown with a beige head. Aromas of raisins, sweet spices, chocolate, demerara sugar. Flavours of caramel, licorice, slightly vinous, dark fruits. Finishes malty and hoppy.

Bottle from Ohtsuki. Medium to dark brown with strong orange coloring and a medium-height, very fine and foamy off-white head. Big caramel, toffee, vanilla and molasses aroma. Very rich malt flavor. Tons of layered and nuanced caramel and toffee. Sweet for sure, but not cloying, with dark dried fruits, and balanced well by alcohol, hops, and a bit of roastiness. Thick, rich, heavy palate works very well. A very nice winter warmer / nighttime sipper. Sweet and big, though rather well balanced.

33cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Pours chestnut brown with a billowing cream head; aromas of sweet fruity malts and Belgian yeast; thick and syrupy in the mouth with rich deep roasted malt flavours, then some dry smokiness; followed by a herbal bitter finish. Very pleasant and drinkable.

33cl brown bottle, label as shown. Pours a beautiful clear, deep mahogany with a big, soapy beige head. Plenty of lacing. Intense aroma of sweet malt, caramel with a surprisingly strong note of yeast to itl. Medium to low carbonation, thick, smooth mouth feel. Drinks like a great highland scotch whiskey: Licorice and alcohol dominate the flavour at first, with increasingly bitter, malty notes as it goes down. Some herbs and spices in there, too. Dry, hoppy finish and medium, lingering bitter after taste. This is a rich, complex dark ale - wee heavy stuff, and the better for it. Well integrated alcohol, smoothly balanced, eminently drinkable - dangerously so at 8.6 % abv. I ordered this as a blind shot - good thing I did!

Bottle from DK. Nice beer. Pours dark amber with lasting white head. Good aroma of apricots, bready matls. Taste of sweet caramel malts, a bit too sweet for me, body is a bit thin, but creamy. Lingering bitter aftertaste.

Tasted at l’Autre oeil with Sammy. Dark brown with a medium off white head. Good retention and above average lacing. Aroma is scotch, caramel, and roasted malt. Flavor is caramel, toasted malt, scotch, taffy, wood and a bit of hop bitterness. Medium body with a liquorous/sticky mouthfeel.

Lautre Oeil with Diogene. Served somewhat too cold, taste definately improved as warmed. Dark brown with a white head and lacey. Bottle expiring September 2011. Complex malt, and that comes through in the aroma, carbonation right there. Understated as a scotch, but that is a good thing.
