Commercial Description:
The bottom fermented, dark Gösser Stiftsbräu is brewed according to old, inherited traditions. With a smoky, roasted nose and a thick and creamy taste on the palate, Stiftsbräu is a sophisticated delight for lovers of a slightly sweet, dark beer. The overall impression that Stiftsbräu creates is one of great harmony and well roundedness.

12 ounce bottle - $1.79 at Hop City in Atlanta, Georgia. Appearance: Pours out a clearish, dark brown body with a frothy, airy, light khaki-colored head. Smell: Slightly sweet-scented dark malts in the nose with a touch of dark caramel and drizzle of Karo Dark syrup and backed by light notes of fruit, used nickels, and lightly floral, herbal hops. Taste: Toned-down dark malts with sweet tastes of dark caramel candy and more of that Karo Dark. Subdued hint of dark fruitiness. More displeasing metallic pinches. Floral, herbal hops, though mild and with an equally mild bitterness. Smooth, semi-dry finish, but, blast, more soiled coins. Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium-light carbonation. Drinkability: Well, it’s no Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel, that much is certain. I’ve never been sure (or interested enough to find out) how to pronounce Gösser, but it always makes me think of Gozer the Gozerian from the movie Ghosterbusters. The beer is somewhat metallic which always gets an instant red card from me, so I cannot recommend it in good faith. However, I will instead cheerfully recommend Ghostbusters!

Poured dark brown with some reddish tint. A thin white to off-white head appeared and produced a bit of lacing. The aroma was malty and nutty with some faint chocolate. The flavor was plenty of malts and had a nutty, chocolate thing going on that was eclipsed at the end by some pleasant fruity sweetness. Thin, super dry and easy to drink. Good.

Bottle @ Hotel Stefanie Hippach, one month past best before date. Malty aroma with milk chocolate. Malty sweetish flavor with caramel, nutmeg, cinnamon. Some nutty caramelly bitterness in the aftertaste. Not unpleasant.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown/black color with a light tan head. LIght flavors of malts and chocolate, not overwhelming, but well-balanced. Medium bodied. Has a good mouth feel and finishes easy.

Bottle from Market of Choice. Cola brown pour with hefty carbonation bubble and a thin tan head. Aroma was full of roasted malt, caramel malt and a slight bit of coffee. Flavor was mostly the burnt/roasted malts with some caramel and a weird coffee/chocolate hybrid flavor. Not a bad beer really, but nothing to write home about.
