This is a much maligned beer, it is, I think one of the most impressive beers of it’s class, the bottled version gives no impression of how they serve it in the tap. You order it, and another beer at the same time. You quaff the second beer, by which time the Spezial may be ready. It is served by natural carbonation alone. When the glass arrives it is surrounded by the most astounding hop aroma I have ever smelled - of Saaz and Hallertau hops. The beer is a clear gold and atop is the head, which is so firm and lasting you could put a straw in it and the straw would just remain there. You prepare to drink this beer, you have to drink through the head - it’s almost solid, and finally get to the beer below. The taste is superby clean and hoppy with no stickiness, it has a flavour which is the quintescence of the Austrian brewers art. I’ts bottled version sadly is a pale likeness. you have to try it at the tap. Geiserich (1790), Vienna, Austria

Poured a light golden body with a medium sized thick white head. Honeyish nose, a touch herbal. Nice piney hopiness, light maltiness. A surprisingly pleasant pils, more than likely the best one today and yet I’m at a loss of words (and notes) for it. Ah, well. Gösser can do some nice stuff when they want to it seems. 6/3/7/3/13
GÖSSER SPEZIAL (5.1%), HUNGARY Poured a very pale yellow/gold body witha a small white head that went away relatively slow. Light nose, dusty and herbal, slightly acidic, not really impressive. The taste is light as well, but nice, sweet graininess, flowery hopiness. One dimensional, but, like the Austrian version, quite tasty. 5/2/6/3/12 greystreet80 (191), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
