Commercial Description:
The bottom fermented, dark Gösser Stiftsbräu is brewed according to old, inherited traditions. With a smoky, roasted nose and a thick and creamy taste on the palate, Stiftsbräu is a sophisticated delight for lovers of a slightly sweet, dark beer. The overall impression that Stiftsbräu creates is one of great harmony and well roundedness.

On-tap, served in a standard bar pint glass. Poured a clear ruby hued brown, nice sized foamy pale tan/off-white head that had to be drained off, fair amount of ringed laced sticking, a good start. Pleasant nose, toasted nuts and lightly roasted chocolate malts. Subtle dark fruitiness, something sweet like roasted figs. Smooth medium body, softly crisp and dry. Sweet dark malty taste, lightly roasted almonds and chocolate malts, along with a caramelized sugariness. A hidden sweet fruitiness pokes it’s head out in the middle. The hops are mild and largely buried, only providing a soft spiciness at the end. First time I’ve had this Munich Dunkel, better than the Gösser pale lager I’ve tried in the past, went well with the swiss and mushroom hamburger I ordered.

Gosser Dark, 0.33 l bottle.
New rating: Clear reddish brown body with bigger ebony head. Malty, caramel and coffee aroma, pretty fine. Flavor was coffee bitterish more than sweet like roasted sugar or caramel. Hints of some wood noted as well. Quite long and pleasing finish, although leaves a bit watery impression. Obviously I had a spoiled bottle. This is a decent dunkel.

Old rating: Pours clear reddish brown body with medium to smaller ebony head. Quite weak aroma of coffee, some caramel too. Very watery flavor, quite empty, not bitter, nor sweet, it’s not bad but weak. Small carbonation, watery texture, weak, but long finish. Nothing special.

Tallahassee, Fl. - Liquor Loft - 12 oz bottle. Very dark copper pour, nice soft khaki colored head which leaves light lacing. Sweet, sugary, cotton candy-like aroma with some ripening vegetable accents. Lots of caramel in the flavor. Maple syrup accents in the back end, some cotton candy. Could be cloying, but its not. Nice, thickish, rich mouthfeel. Glad I bought a six of this.

Bottle. Hmmm. I remember really liking this a lot when I first tried it at the Concordia club in 2002, whilst watching the GErmans down the Saudis 8-0. I suppose I mustn’t have tried many decent dark beers at that time, because it seems pretty ho-hum now. Sweetness is about right, some nuttiness and malty character, caramel at a stretch.

Brown with copper highlights, minimal head. Aroma and taste are similar, classic dunkel: toasted grain, nuttiness, chocolate. Nice and simple but effective.

Bottle sampled. Pours brown with an orange hue and a small beige head. Aroma of roast, caramel, and fruit. The flavor is sweet, caramel, fruit, thin, with a slight presence of hops.

Bottle. Malty aromas of toasted dark bread start right off with herbs, dough, and cooked root vegetables behind it. Head is frothy white and is moslty diminishing with fair lacing and the color is clear brown. Flavor is both lightly sweet and acidic to start and moderately bitter in the finish. Palate is light to medium, watery and it has a lively carbonation. Though not bad, especially in the smell, it’s a little lacking in taste.
