Commercial Description:
The bottom fermented, dark Gösser Stiftsbräu is brewed according to old, inherited traditions. With a smoky, roasted nose and a thick and creamy taste on the palate, Stiftsbräu is a sophisticated delight for lovers of a slightly sweet, dark beer. The overall impression that Stiftsbräu creates is one of great harmony and well roundedness.

Fairly skunky aroma with toasty malt/bread notes and a light hint of fresh cut tobacco. The body is an amber/brown color and holds a lasting, bubbly tan head that is about a pinky thick. Mild cocoa, smoke, malt, dough and bread with only the sweeter flavors asserting themselves. Some faint caramel as well and again some very faint tobacco notes. FInish is fairly sweet with a cocoa/chocolate malt flavor. Decent enough.

Very dark brown/ruby with 2.5cm of frothy, light tan head. Nice pour. Aroma of toasty, biscuity malt, light skunk, light cocoa powder, and a light dose of crisp hops. Skunk disappears in the flavor. Mostly malt- toasty cookies, cocoa powder, and just a hint of noble hop in the finish. Skunk returns in the aftertaste. Medium body, just smoother than balanced. Easy drinking.

bottle, poured into glass. Very dark, tastes rather light compared wit color. Probably one of the better austrian beers.

Bottle. Dark pour, though not pitch black. Decent malt taste gives it a decent body, though the sweetness evens it out quite a bit. I enjoyed this beer, though its not extraordinary.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Clear chestnut brown pour with a brown head. Aroma is light and slightly roasted with some hints of cookie dough, toffee, and some caramel. Flavor is sweet and roasty with some caramel and chocolate with a very smooth finish and a sweet and slightly bitter aftertaste. Not too bad.

Bottle, 4.5% in Rome. Weak caramel aroma. Mild bready flavour with a slightly roasted aftertaste and a hint of green apple. Clear dark brown colour. Unstable light brown head. Hint of sourness which does well to balance.

The aroma is sweet with toasted malt, caramel, toffee, chocolate, and a hint of coffee. The appearance is a medium red/brown with a foamy three finger head. The flavor is like the aroma but with an astringent bitterness that comes out of nowhere since I don’t small any hops. The palate is refreshing and somewhat smooth but still to thin for me. This one came really close to greatness but the astringent bitterness really hurts it.
