Commercial Description:
The bottom fermented, dark Gösser Stiftsbräu is brewed according to old, inherited traditions. With a smoky, roasted nose and a thick and creamy taste on the palate, Stiftsbräu is a sophisticated delight for lovers of a slightly sweet, dark beer. The overall impression that Stiftsbräu creates is one of great harmony and well roundedness.

Poured into the tall cylindrical thick-walled heavy Gosser glass, it was a very clear brown with a good 1.5" head that stuck around. Smelled pretty good, somewhat chocolatey. Nice smooth mellow sweet malt, with chocolate and toffee and some roasted grains. Hops were noticeable and nicely balanced the sweetness. Lots of body, expecting much less I was pleasantly surprised.

One of the two Gossers that I tried in Austria. Brown colored with a thin brown head. Malty aromas. Flavour balances between sweet and bitter (and unfortunately for my taste more to the sweet side). Not bad though

Draft at Black Forest Inn. Dark brown in appearance (like a brown ale) with a creamy head. Smooth, creamy and fulfilling in the mouth. More sweet than bitter with a biscuity, molasses flavor. Couldn’t imagine a better session beer. I imagine this is much better on draft, can’t imagine the creaminess out of a bottle without a widget. Highly recommended.

Cold 12oz bottle: Pours a clear cola color with some ivory bubbles around the edges of the glass. Aroma is of rich malts, molasses, plums and nice yeast. Taste is of rich malts, plums, subtle earthy hops and molasses. Smooth, medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Ending is of rich, sweet malts with notes of molasses.

Bottle. Poured dark brown with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with fair lacing. Medium sweet chocolate aroma. Medium body. Medium dark sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of average duration.
