Commercial Description:
The bottom fermented, dark Gösser Stiftsbräu is brewed according to old, inherited traditions. With a smoky, roasted nose and a thick and creamy taste on the palate, Stiftsbräu is a sophisticated delight for lovers of a slightly sweet, dark beer. The overall impression that Stiftsbräu creates is one of great harmony and well roundedness.

Took a quick shine to this little baby beer. Love to see it available in pint-sized bottles as before I knew it the glass was empty. Blast.
Pours a deepest cola brown - quite honestly shimmers in the lights - with a tight, inch thick, neat and tidy tan head that held on and laced a lovely weave down the glass. Dusty, dark, bitter chocolate, the distinct scent of Lübeck marzipan and a little cocoa set the aroma scene, all sweet, savoury and sticky. Lightly roasted coffee and charred, pasty grains start it off in the mouth but remain a little premature of judgement. It’s soft and creamy upon the tongue, quite light in body making it sessionable but the sweet malt flavours soon take hold. Dusty, dark chocolate and marzipan again here, as some savoury, dried fruits and a little ’blood & rust’ that sits quite nicely adding a good depth and nice balance. Feint herbal edge drifts in and out of the long malty, rich swallow. Slight peatiness develops; rust flavour lasts in the aftertaste but again just sits nicely on the edge. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Not the most sessionable of beers due to its rich flavour, but a few won’t hurt. Nice (33cL, BBE 04/07, The Beer Store, Morley)

Dark mahogany color with moderate head. Aroma is lighty malty with a fair amount of hops that I dont know the name for, but associated strongly with czech beers. Flavor is a nice balance between those same hops with a fair amount of carmel malt. Lightly sweet, and very drinkable.

Much better than its predecessor. Sweet maltiness, with a flavor of fruit skins, dark fruits, but slightly weak and unbalanced.

(Bottle was six years old). Hard to find in the New York City area. Pours brown with consistant off-white head. Aroma is sweet malt. Flavor is also sweet malt character with more bitter fruit elements in the finish, like prunes and raisins. Nice body and balanced.
