Commercial Description:
The bottom fermented, dark Gösser Stiftsbräu is brewed according to old, inherited traditions. With a smoky, roasted nose and a thick and creamy taste on the palate, Stiftsbräu is a sophisticated delight for lovers of a slightly sweet, dark beer. The overall impression that Stiftsbräu creates is one of great harmony and well roundedness.

330ml bottle from Dan Murphys with an expiry date of May 2009. Dark brown beer with a brief off white head. Nose of warm roasted nutty caramel malts. Flavour of smoky nutty caramel malts. Some coffee in there as well. Finish is sweet and malty. Smooth and easy going. Not too far from a warm English real ale though some may find it too sweet.

Dark brown, clear, medium off-white head. Bland caramel, hint of apple fruit. Too sweet, thin and fizzy.

Bottle (in NZ), pours a cola-ish brown with a large pillowy white head. Uninspiring grainy malt nose with a touch sweetness. More caramal malt on the palate, with a touch of roastedness. Pleasant enough, but a little sweet for me.

A nice aroma of full dark malts and some nice adjuncts of perhaps some caramel. It’s appearance is dark brown, with a thin white head. It’s full in flavor with a nice malty taste, very dark roasted malts. The beer is very smooth, but a bit filling. A great Austrian 1st.

On draught in a bar in Vienna. A clear dark red colored beer, with a thick beige head. The aroma of caramel malt met a touch of cerries. Also some hop. The taste of caramel, dry bitter and raisins. The aftertaste is a little dry bitter.
