Commercial Description:
The bottom fermented, dark Gösser Stiftsbräu is brewed according to old, inherited traditions. With a smoky, roasted nose and a thick and creamy taste on the palate, Stiftsbräu is a sophisticated delight for lovers of a slightly sweet, dark beer. The overall impression that Stiftsbräu creates is one of great harmony and well roundedness.

With some trepidation I popped the top on this 12 ounce bottle. (The best by date was 11-2006) No worries though, it poured dark brown with reddish highlights. The modest head was a light tan. Some lacings. Aroma was roast malt aroma. Tasted coffee, cocoa, roasted malts and a bit of bitter hops. Very nice dunkel. Might have to try a fresher one sometime to compare my impressions. And at 4.5% abv it is definately sessionable.

Darker brown coloured beer with little carbonation and an average off-white head. Light malty light roasted sweet touched. Medium palate. Finish is light sweet malty with some wattery sweeter light roasted touches. Light, little taste.

330ml bottle, BB 10 2007...luckily it was a freebie! Dark brown body with ruby highlights, small persistant offwhite head atop. Roasted malt nose, nuts, toffee, dark chocolate, brown sugar with a bit of dried fruit in there for good measure. Reasonably lean body, creamy carbonation, smooth texture, drying but not as much as you would expect from a beer of this colour. Smooth body packed full of delicous malt flavours nut and chocolate seem prominant, has a slight toffee sweetness, with hints of prunes, bread and coffee. Finish is quite abrupt, not overly bitter. Particularly nice and approachable dark beer.

Bottle: Ruby-amber coloured, firm, creamy off-white head; distinctive aroma of dried fruits, backed by malt and molasses; sweet flavour, light bodied; mild sweet-fruity finish with a bit of salt in the aftertaste. A two-times diluted Doppelbock, still tasty......

Bottle, Rogoznica, HR. Nose of brine, figgy dried fruit, almost rauch-like smoked waxiness and cocoa. That’s an 8. Beige on mahogany, with ruby flashes. Laces beautifully. This is a smooth, chocolatey dunkel with bags of smoked malt character approaching rauchbier status, and at least as good as the Lasko Temno.

On tap, yard house. Pours a dark brown, with touches of violet. Aroma of malts, some wood and caramel. Flavor is subdued, and slightly sweet. Definitely taste the malt-heavy flavors here, maybe some raisins and soil as well. Overall, pretty solid. But halfway through a pint, I was a little bored.
