jlf278 (250), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Mar 16, 2009 Truly fit for an emperor. This beer smells like heaven. There is a ton of dark stone fruit with burnt sugar and a touch of bourbon on the nose. Flavor is much of the same with a nice transition from sweet to dry. The flavors meld and then drift away ever so smoothly. The palate could have been a little fuller and certainly left my mouth feeling really wet, but that’s not too bad. The appearance was the only average characteristic, lacking much of a head and holding a mediocre dull brown. Overall, extremely delicious, one that I could drink by the liter, and hopefully will. maxpizzo (44), Italy Mar 16, 2009 excellent beer.it is really dark with a creamy white head.aroma of dark fruit, maybe raisins and chocolate or licorice.flavour is stron but balanced with notes of wine and caramel, sensation of malt.the alcohol shows only at the end, followed by a fantastic sensation of sweetness microakes (94), Canada Mar 14, 2009 A lovely gurgling sound emanates from the bottle as it pours a dark, clear liquid. The smell is divinity touched with caramel and malt. A delicate taste rapidly gives was to malts which are then quickly pushed aside by beautiful caramel vixens, spreading their sweetness all over the room. Gualthiero (35), Antwerp, Belgium Mar 11, 2009 Thick, creamy head. Spices in the aroma. Liquorice taste. Great beer, but overclassed by its Christmas version. garthicus (1215), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 4, 2009 Thanks to HogTownHarry. Pretty dark brown/black. Large off white head. Aroma: peppery, malt, slight chocolate. Nail varnish remover, alcohol. Flavour: chewy toffee, malt, chocolate, alcohol and shoe polish LOL. However it has a lovely long smooth chocolate malt finish. Lovely. Nordcore (266), North of, Norway Mar 4, 2009 Apperance; dark brown. Aroma; malt and some nuts and a flavor that is malt and some fruits. Have to try this again. Ryan82SM (231), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Mar 3, 2009 Roasted malt and perhaps a little vinegar in this pour. Opaque appearance with a creamy head that stuck around for the duration. Flavor has some apricot, grapes, burnt sugar, toast, apple vinegar and was a bit grassy at times. Palate was full bodied and lively but also bubbly at the finish. Good stuff. jtheye (12), Roeland Park, Kansas, USA Feb 5, 2009 330 ml/11.2 oz bottle. The write-up on the side of the bottle said that Gouden Carolus would charm me, and it did. This is one of those commercially produced Belgian strong ales that is better than most of the beer produced by the Trappists. I’ll be getting a bomber next time.
