mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Dec 9, 2007 Pours from the bottle a viscous murky and muddy reddish-brown color. Creates a thick and tight, but thin beige head which fades quickly to a few isolated wisps of thin foam. Lots of sweet fruity aromas ascend from the snifter with luscious notes of figs, raisins, black cherries, banana, cloves, molasses and caramel malts. Palate was quite full and round with a touch of oiliness. Carbonation seemed a bit tame for a Belgian Ale however. Flavor is very sweet and just shy of being a bit cloying. The alcohol comes through warmingly to cut through the sweetnesss. Delicious flavors of ripe and dark dried fruits, honey, spices, caramel syrup, toffee and slightly toasted malts coat the tongue. Finish is sweet and warming like a port wine. A gentile but classy Belgian Strong. Angeloregon (2024), Portland, Oregon, USA Dec 8, 2007 Updated: Jul 29, 2008On tap at Green Dragon in Portland (thanks Jonathan)--Poured a distinctive brown thick body with a two-finger creamy, fluffy off-white head. Yeasty brown sugar and caramel aroma. Thick and bouncing mouth feel. Smooth and warming. An excellent world class brew! Bartzilla (441), San Diego, California, USA Dec 8, 2007 Bottle at Gollem, Amsterdam. This was the beer that settled me in. Reminded me I’m a puny mortal facing the gods of destruction. I fought hard against the delicious esters of the yeast but was ultimately overcome by the sweet malts. This is seriously delicious, kids. Don’t try this at your friend’s house. taunusmies (276), Finland Dec 3, 2007 Rich, warming taste. Comfortably sweet aroma with raisins, brown sugar and fruits. Alcohol quite well hidden. Mildly roasted and long aftertaste. MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Dec 1, 2007 rich brown color. fizzy tan head. nice malty and yeasty aroma. flavor rich and complex with chocolate, malt, yeast, grapes and spice. well balanced. finishes caramel sweet. sloth (1657), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA Nov 25, 2007 Bottled: Medium sized offwhite head, retention is good with a fair amount of lasting lace. Fairly clear amber/dark copper hued brew. Nose is lightly fruity, raisins, plum and caramelly with maybe some chocolate notes as well. Body is med/full with a nice carbonation level, lightly oily. Dark fruity flavors, raisin, grape, lightly sweet malts with some yeastiness happening, lightly earthy. Nice fruity finish with a hint of melon. Enjoyed @ statelineliquors last Belgian tasting 11/10/07 beachbum25 (778), Powellville, Maryland, USA Nov 11, 2007 750 Ml Bottle-Clear amber color w/a nice white head. Sweet fruity aroma. Rich full flavor w/traces of cane sugar, caramel, Figs, dark fruit, & spices. Very good Belgian w/a satisfying flavor, though not as sweet as some. Alcohol is evedent, this is an after dinner, warmer upper. Very fresh w/a long spicy finish. DruncanVeasey (2690), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Nov 6, 2007 Nothing like expected. Nose is juicily estery, with overripe banana, plum, maybe strawberry, and a clove/cinnamon spiciness (salivating). Heading towards my top 100 and I’ve not even tasted it yet. Aromatically heady and fruity, but not overpowering. Raisins, white pepper, caramel, more banana. Bubblegum and dandelion and Burdock rootiness in the snout and beyond. Swill and inhale. How can the mouth match that?? It can’t, but it tries with more cinnamon, heady fruit and Dunkelish plums. A banana, brown sugar and cinnamon snadwich of a beer. Slips down wickedly with a delicate dusting of spice. Clear red with a billowing beige head.
