Commercial Description:
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Nothing like expected. Nose is juicily estery, with overripe banana, plum, maybe strawberry, and a clove/cinnamon spiciness (salivating). Heading towards my top 100 and I’ve not even tasted it yet. Aromatically heady and fruity, but not overpowering. Raisins, white pepper, caramel, more banana. Bubblegum and dandelion and Burdock rootiness in the snout and beyond. Swill and inhale. How can the mouth match that?? It can’t, but it tries with more cinnamon, heady fruit and Dunkelish plums. A banana, brown sugar and cinnamon snadwich of a beer. Slips down wickedly with a delicate dusting of spice. Clear red with a billowing beige head.

The aroma is of figs, malt. It’s copper with a tone of red, very dark. The flavor is malty, with tones of fruit like figs. The palate is thick and creamy - very nice!

330ml bottle. Rich brown, initially thick beige head. Beautiful sweet fruity aroma - apple, pear, melon, glue-solvent. Gentle carbonation leaves a smooth creamy feel in the mouth. Upon swallowing a beautiful wave of richly roasted malt covers the tongue. Given the colour I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised, but it was so wonderfully rich a taste it really lit my eyes up. Everything in excellent balance - well mellowed maltiness, subtly winey sweetness. Two sips, and I indeed feel like an emperor!

Beautiful dark brown colour and thick blond head. Aroma is pleasat and there is sweet malt and a little alcohol. Flavour is slightly sweet but also little bitter. Medium bodied with appropriate carbonation. Beautiful beer, pleasant aroma and flavor, easy to drink, but something missing.

On tap, from old notes. Deep brown in color with thick tan foam, good retention and lacing. Big malty aroma, little bit of banana and coriander, molasses maybe? Flavor is very sweet, lots of dark brewing sugars, lots of dark malts, just a hint of coriander. Very tasty, but VERY rich.

Pours brown with an off white frothy head. Smells and tastes of dark fruit. The aroma is spicy with notes of toffee while the flavor remains sweet. Very smooth and drinkable.
