Commercial Description:
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Bottle, 1 pint 9.4 oz. Great pour with decent head. Simmers down as sweet aroma arises. Fruit tastes as berries and twigs, slight nuts... well rounded. Alcohol not too apparent. Finishes smooth. Lulls one to great times.

(Bottle BB 14/06/09) Caramel and slightly alcohol aroma. Amber colour, bright and small, light brown, fully diminishing head. Caramel and berry-like flavour with slight spiciness. Lively carbonated, alcoholic (not too much; actually only warming), medium-bodied and slightly syrupy palate. Very delicious strong ale! 10/09/06

rootbeer brown body with small white head...splendid aroma of chewy malts, toasty caramels, toffee, nougat, twigs and berries...flavor begins nice and sugary, leading to caramel, brown sugar, and molasses notes...nice palate, and an excellent beer!

Bottle is from BeerBuzzMontreal and has been cellaring for at least a year and a half. bb 14/06/06. Served in a NB worthy glass. Color is orange/reddish brown with a small kahki head. The aroma is kahlua (first time I have ever said that) with some sour cherries and vanilla in the background. Beer is still quite cool, another 10°F should bring the aromas out, still very good smelling. As it warms dark fruits emerge. The intial mouthfeel is huge. The intial taste is nutty, deep dark fruits, vanilla, yeast, and wood followed by a bit of alcohol and tanginess. The flavor is missing a little complexity (for the style) but this doesn’t diminish the fact that this is a great beer. Thanks BBM!
