emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Aug 8, 2009 Pours a dark ruby copper with a one to two finger tan head. The nose is warm, sherry like oxidation, mild rusty quality, some spice, dark fruit. The flavor shows dark fruit, rummy, raisins, brown sugar, oxidatoin, yeasty. The palate shows a nice carbonation and spicy warmth. zvikar (413), Tel-Aviv, Israel Aug 8, 2009 From bottle, pours dark brown with a nice beige head that disappears quickly, aroma of coffee, caramel, nuts and dry fruits, quite balanced, flavor is quite dry and alcohol is too noticable, nuts, caramel and pruns dominate the flavor, sweetness is very high and body is only medium. OK Slokop (91), Tilburg, Netherlands Jul 31, 2009 My Carolus Classic was very old (t.h.t. 28-11-10) when I killed it. Too old actually. Should have killed it earlier. Thin head, flat smell, dry and off-sour taste. No significant and present bitterness. Hard to say what is there, easier to sum up what is not there. Flat and ’laf’. Drank fast, got it over with. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Jul 29, 2009 Bottle at Poechenellekelder in Brussels. Deep brown color with a nice tan head. Rich aroma of sweet dark malt, dark fruit, spice, and alcohol. Flavor is malty and sweet with caramel, cherry, plum, chocolate, and spice. Medium-full and smooth on the palate with soft carbonation. Great beer. Beerman6686 (1263), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 22, 2009 This one poured a mahogany brown color with an off white head. Aroma was rich sweet malts and not much else. Flavor was much the same, very sweet, but nothing sticks out to me at all. Savvy1982 (303), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Jul 21, 2009 Bottle, thanks to hobbersr for sharing! Pours deep brown, more a toffee color than cola, thin head, ropey lacing. Smells immediately like Nibs red licorice, loads of fleshy red fruit, sweet cherry, a bit medicinal, a touch of hops, bread, Christmas pudding. Soft, rich palate, more Christmas cake, licorice, mildly boozy. Great! brewslurp (9), Switzerland does not count Jul 20, 2009 350 ml corked bottle. Cork shot up and hit my kitchen ceiling as soon as I got the metal wire seal off. Feisty. Gigantic monterous rocky head. Dark brown clear color. Very effervecent. Aroma of sweet dark fruits, malt, oak, and tartness. Taste is very well balanced with dark sweet cherries, dark malts, yeasty and a little bready. Maybe a little brown sugar and molassas in there too. Complex stuff. This is a great beer! cking (1012), North Canton, Ohio, USA Jul 19, 2009 Sugary molasses, bread, and dark fruity aroma. A good dose of earthy yeast to compliment the scent. Medium brown color, good amount of lacing and a creamy, lasting off white head. Easy sipping, velvety with a medium to thin feel. Flavor compliments the aroma, only not as impressive. Still plenty of depth with a fair amount of dark, fermented fruits, brown sugar, fresh breads, and musty yeast.
