Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 12, 2005 Updated: Jan 8, 2006(Bottle 33 cl) Deep reddish brown colour, light brown head. Very refinened malty charamel flavours well balanced with the hops. Extremely high gravity and hence a very full body. A very refined Belgian Ale with lots of sweetness, but never cloying. When I first had this in 1993 it was just called "Gouden Carolus" at 7% ABV and came in a bottle with no label. In 1997 it was changed to "Gouden Carolus - Carolus D’Or" at 7,5% ABV and now it’s called "Gouden Carolus Classic" at 8,5% ABV. So it has changed quite a bit but is still a truly Belgian classic. 240793 mephisto (1144), Taiwan May 8, 2005 Updated: Jul 19, 2005bottled. big aroma w/ caramel, coffee and roasted barley. full bodied. notes of chocolate and malt. haukur (682), Reykjavik, Iceland May 5, 2005 deep brown red color, firm head. Interesting aroma, very belgian, yeasty, raisins, hops, malt, plums, vanilla and fruits. Taste is very filling, a bit yeasty but balanced out with malt, maybe some fruits balanced out with the bitterness of chocolate or something like that, incredible body and oh so nice on the tongue, world class brew ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Apr 28, 2005 Deep reddish colour with a small tan head. Malty and sweet aroma with hints of plum. Nice balanced flavor with yeast and a malty dark fruit sweetness. brkc (11), USA Apr 16, 2005 Updated: May 22, 2005This is one that I will try a little more often. Nice rich aroma. A beautiful reddish brown appearance. Moderately sweet flavor. Medium body. The head doesn’t stick around long. I Like it!!! Nekronos (2243), Xalapa, Mexico Mar 20, 2005 Updated: Feb 2, 2006It was strongbut it has the almostsame flavor than the Keizer, but it was ok. The beer did not stop flowing until I served it. I do not like that. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Mar 19, 2005 Thin yellowish head. Dark brown and red coloring. The aroma is massive with pears and vanilla. There are also dates and black walnuts. The mouthfeel is rich and creamy. The taste is full of prunes and pears with some slightly spicy nutmeg in the finish. Slight paper like finish. Smooth is the best way to describe this winner. Certainly a quality made beer with the alcohol well hidden. Dorwart (1807), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Mar 16, 2005 Thin head which reduces to a wisp of foam on the surface rather quickly. Very good carbonation. Great aroma! Rich with dark fruit, black cherries, yeast, molasses, plums, you name it. Bit of brandy also. Color is a dark mahagony brown. Flavor is a bit weak for the great aroma. Malty, yeasty, dry with a nice alcohol warming. Finish is actually short lived and slightly dry and grassy. A good belgian that starts out like a great winner and falls a little short.
