Commercial Description:
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Huge cotton candy and bubble gum aromas in the aroma -- this stuff smells like the day I spent working a concession stand at a carnival. Muddy, murky, ruddy appearance with tinge of amber and lots of haziness. NIce sugary sweetness with a little acidic souness and plenty more hops than I would anticipate. Nice overall mouthfeel and a pleasant warmth. A very good brew.

Draft at CAH. Medium brown, OK head. Aroma of wood and faint dark fruit, and a note of dried hops. Flavor was also quite woody, some malt, and more undefined dark fruits. Somehow, not quite in balance, the flavors just didn’t meld. Could improve with a bottle that has been aged a bit. Incidentally, it was much better with food, as the wood notes fell back and fruit flavors of currants came forward. Rating based upon drinking without food.

Bottle. Red-brown, hazy with medium tan head and lacing. Lovely Caramel aroma. Flavor is light, caramel and alcohol in aftertaste. Sweet finish. Good beer.

Rich and warming aroma with plenty of alcohol and caramelised oranges. Pours a deep ruby with a shrinking off-white head and sticky lace. The body is sweet, toffeeish and a tad cloying.

Deep brown, clear, with a good-sized tan head. Nice sweet nose, with chocolate, grapes, and light licorice or anise notes. Flavor is sweet, with some cider, a touch of anise, raisins, bready yeast, and a good deal of bitterness.

Rich, decadently sweet offering. Caramel, dark fruit, and orange. Alcohol well hidden. Cloying? Maybe, but I like this stuff.

Murky brown color with a thin light brown head. Complex and appealing aroma of raisin and figs, sugar, malt and bubble guml. Very rich and enjoyable flavor of figs, malt , raisin, bubble gum and alcohol. Full body, liquorous texture, lively carbonation. Amazing stuff, this is truly a dessert in its own.
