Served in a Gouden Carolus glass, pours a brown head that lasts all the time and leaves some lace. Red brown colour. Smells of dried fruits, burnt wood, soaked earth, toffee, molasses. Sweet flavor, not much pronounced. Taste of dried fruits, spices, with pepper, cloves and nutmeg. It could be a greater beer, I found that it lacks some more sharpness or having stronger ends on both smell and taste. drjay44 (757), Salida, Colorado, USA Jun 14, 2009 Updated: Jul 8, 200933 cl. bottle. Pours a beige head of good duration, with very attractive, curtain lacing, over a clear, reddish brown (SRM 20) body....nose heavy with dried fruits (raisin, cherry, plum) mild toffee, honey, mild molasses, also a tinge of burnt wood (campfire)....tastes initially of sweet toffee malts, then balancing fruits, again raisin and dried cherry, bit of plum, molasses, and a touch of wood balance, ends up slightly sweet....mouth feel is thick and heavy, carbonation relatively high. A lovely brew. bonfunck (149), Waasmunster, Belgium Jun 14, 2009 33cl bottle from de hopduvel Ghent. dark ruby brown beer, strong foam head with a good nose, good balanced flavour between taste and alcohol. very good beer from a very good brewer BillyMidnight (41), Alberta, Canada Jun 8, 2009 This is how beer is supposed to taste. Grain and yeast along with nuts, dark fruits, and an almost creamy texture. The flavour performs judo chops on your palate, moving in unexpected directions, morphing like a chamaeleon before surprising you with its next strike. Only complaints are it could be a bit more fizzy, and it doesn’t come in a 40. Chef Chad (102), Grand Junction, Colorado, USA Jun 1, 2009 Smells a bit old.. some plum and must. Pours Brown with not head at all. There was little to no carbonation to this beer... I am starting to think that this is a very old bottle. Raisins, plums, burnt sugar and some nuttiness... Bloekie (149), Belgium Jun 1, 2009 Very dark strong ale with a small tanned head. Smells of caramel candy. Taste is of nuts, smoke and oak. Very deep flavor with an almost overwhelming palate that keeps changing. Really enjoyable beer. bacummings (21), Alabama, USA May 28, 2009 Nutty, smokey flavor that changes every second that it’s in your mouth. Kind of foamy texture. fata2683 (836), Panama City, Florida, USA May 19, 2009 bottle, pours brown with a tall light tan head. Carmel malt, raisin and fig nose. Dark rock candy, creamy roasted malt, and a light spice in the finish. This is like a mild version of the Van De Keizer, but is a great stand alone strong ale. Extremely impressed.
