Columbia, SC - Green’s Discount Beverages - 750 ml bottle - cellared in the store. Nice dark chestnut pour with a soft, silky khaki head. Warm, enticing liquor-like aroma. Hints of bourbon and brandy - whiff of molasses. Flavor is sweet and full-bodied. Pick up hints of toffee, brandy, molasses, caramel - it’s all good. Rich, luxuriant mouthfeel. Alchohol hidden well. Excellent Belgian - probably passed this one by several times because I thought it and the Grand Cru were the same - glad I investigated!

Bottled(330ml). –Deep reddish/brown coloured, medium sized beige head. Aroma is malty, fruity (raisins, cherries, orange) and spicy with notes of toffee, chocolate and obvious alcohol presence with just a tiny coriander hint. Pleasant spicy finish.

Dark brown with a small, tight head. Aroma was bready with a hint of banana. Fruity taste, very sweet, with coffee notes and just a touch of dryness. I found there was just a bit too much frothy carbonation in the mouthfeel. Otherwise a delightful strong ale.

Dark brown, slightly red colored, medium sized beige head. Licorice, and nice warming medium alcohol in aroma, also with spices, chocolate and some sweetness, fine aroma. Medium to full bodied. Licorice, sweetness, medium alcohol, spices in flavor, sweetness lasts in aftertaste with medium alcohol and mild licorice.

Bottle conditioned. Deep copper bronze, moderate thin white head and good condition. Sweet aromas of chocolate, malt and caramel with some oakiness noticable. Good barley wine notes in the mouth with toffee, caramel, silky chocolate and a slight fruitiness. Carbonation is a little over assertive. Finish is quite short and malty sweet.

Bottle, 330ml @ Rustico in Alexandria VA. Pours dark amber with a brown half finger tan head. Nose is malty sweet and robust. Taste is sweet malty, syrupy thick and really damn tasty, another great Gouden.

Dirty brown with a hint of a prettier colour like orange or red. The bottle had been knocked over in the past 2 days and shaken a bit. Fair starting head. Aroma of alcohol with musty fruit beneath. Refreshing for the high alcohol content. Must be drunk at warmer termperatures. Very nice palate and refined mild flavour. No overwhelming flavours. A nice balance of fruit, malt and light spice. A noble drink.
