Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. Bottle courtesy of and shared with Blankboy. Dark brown, thin tan head. Strong sweet aroma. Strong sweet taste. A little stale in the aftertaste. Wonderfully strong sweet Belgian Ale that had more in common with a recent Fuller’s Vintage than the classic strong Belgian Ale taste in my opinion. Just a little staleness kept it from achieving greatness.

[103-20061118] Tap @ Point Brugge (Pittsburgh, PA). Aroma is malted and yeasty, reminds me of sweet beef OXO boullion cubes. Cloudy, brown body with a fair-lasting creamy light brown head and nice lacing on the glass. Some raisin and figgy fruity flavour characteristics along with light celery, hops, and some chewy toffee in this OXO beefed-up beer, and the alcohol is obvious. Medium-full body. Seems exotic, would have preferred a smaller sample.

Bottle: Excellent aroma of fruit, toffee, light chocolate, and a hint of yeast. Pours a dark transparent amber with a small off-white head. Fruit, raisin, light chocolate, toffee, and yeast. Light alcohol flavor and moderate warmth come into play in the finish.

On draft at the brewery tap, March 2007. Deep, opaque brown with a decent tap head. Great aroma of dark fruit, toffee, marzipan and spice. The flavour inclined towards sweetness, with caramel, preserved fruit and almonds. This excellent beer had a warming alcohol finish.

Sweet malty and light fruits, vapory, alcohol. Dark brown-red clear with small off-white head. Medium carbonation in medium body. Starts malty and sweet, with some fruitiness. Finish is sweet fruity. Light toffee finish, smooth sweet after. Very good.

Raising, syrupy nose with a touch of alcohol; ruddy-brown color and a low tight head. Heavy sweet malt body with tastes of brown sugar and a slightly spiced end. Full body and a thick syrupy texture. Good after dinner beer.

Bottle via trade with HogTownHarry. Hazy reddish-brown with a good sized off-white head. Very nice aroma - warm, rich and sweet, with notes of malt, dried fruit and dark sugar. Smooth, full mouthfeel. Big flavour of fruity malt, a bit of chocolate, some spicy yeast, and a slightly boozy finish. Lovely!
