Commercial Description:

Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

0.75 l bottle. Reddish brown color with creamy tan head. Malty and fruity aroma with raisins, figs, chocolade, almonds and rum. Sweet flavor with tart fruitiness and rum. Long, tart, sweet and warming finish with notes of licorice.

Pours a hazy mahongoany hue, cool woody brown, with a with a nice bit of froth, if short-lived. Aroma, sour, citric, and spicy, from the start, lemon peel, clove, and pepper. Taste: big, brisk, fruity blast on the palate, softly fading into a firm malt base. Cherries, berrries, bananas, melon, all accompanied by a tidy peppery kick on the side, and the flavor never fades, nestles well in the mouth, offering a resilient, bright tingle on the tongue. Great texture, wonderful play on the palate, a genial joust of tastes in the mouth. Fruity, to the point of being wine-like, but with plenty of it’s own individual charms to make it a supple, special little thing in the mouth. Very special ale, hunt it down, if you must!

Looks and pours like mud but has a nice light brown head, very fruity(prunes?) and alcoholic nose, almost chocolatey flavour with the alcohol repeating on you then back to the prune juice, complex and medium texture. Drink this at the right temperature and it gets better.

Draft at CAH. Medium brown, OK head. Aroma of wood and faint dark fruit, and a note of dried hops. Flavor was also quite woody, some malt, and more undefined dark fruits. Somehow, not quite in balance, the flavors just didn’t meld. Could improve with a bottle that has been aged a bit. Incidentally, it was much better with food, as the wood notes fell back and fruit flavors of currants came forward. Rating based upon drinking without food.

10.01.04 750ml Bottle. Cloudy, pressed-cider brown with big, lasting, khaki head. Luscious aromas of banana bread, ripe plum, carrots cooked in brown sugar and butter. Soft body like freshly whipped cream followed by a crisp hop bitterness and slight astringency. Medium sweet and sugary. A complex conundrum for a strong ale, the sweet/dry mix makes for a pleasant and refreshing brew, however it is unsettling at times.

Bright ruby body with a modest frothy beige head. Warm kettle caramelization, plum, cherry, and toffee aromas. Flavor is medium sweet with light fruit skin acidity and bitterness. Cola tones early, but nice dark fruit qualities develop as it warms. Very solid stuff from Het Anker.

From my fall 2006 notebook. Dark brown body with a sweet malty nose. Faint off-white/light brown head. Sweet malty body with balancing hops.
