Re-rate Feb 25th 2006
Sweet sugar/cola aroma with mild spice, brown sugar and floral notes. Cloudy brown with faint red hints. Smooth candy sugar, alcohol, molasses, rum, bread pudding, rum-raisin cake, dark fruits and yeast. Still an amazingly flavorful beer. Alcohol is hotter than I remember, but the flavor is still amazing

July 9th 05 re-rate:
Probably my palate had evolved, but this is a fantastic beer. It tastes like X-mas. Rum raisin flavors predominate, but malty bread pudding is in there too. This is quickly becoming a favorite.
Original Rating
Bottle courtesy of Matta. Thanks. Sweet slightly spicy, alcoholic aroma. Beautiful dark brown color. Almost looks like heavily concentrated tea. Sweet and incredibly smooth taste. Highly drinkable and even has a bit of a hop finish. Real nice beer.

This beer pours a murky orange/red with quickly dissipating carbonation. Aroma of caramel, toffee, cinnamon, raisin, apple peel, and toasted marshmallow. The flavor is quite impressive with tangy toffee, raisin, chocolate, and rich caramely bread. Ethanol highlights the finish, playing off the sweet flavors nicely. Not as good as their Grand Cru but still a fine beer.

Bottle. Pours a dark mahogany-red body with a long lasting, large, frothy, eggshell-coloured head. The aroma is very rich and malty with notes of berries, plums, chocolate, and burnt caramel. There are some dusty chocolate and burnt malt flavours with a hefty dose of dark fruitiness. Alcohol muscles its way through at the right time. Complex and very well done.

750 ml: Nice aroma of raisins, rum, and spice? A bit thin in body detracted from this beer. Somewhat of an acidic twang and decent warmth of alcohol. Similar to a Raisin D’ Etre, however that was much better than this. An above average Belgian Barleywine. Should age gracefully for many years so I will have to re-rate again.
