Commercial Description:
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Thin head which reduces to a wisp of foam on the surface rather quickly. Very good carbonation. Great aroma! Rich with dark fruit, black cherries, yeast, molasses, plums, you name it. Bit of brandy also. Color is a dark mahagony brown. Flavor is a bit weak for the great aroma. Malty, yeasty, dry with a nice alcohol warming. Finish is actually short lived and slightly dry and grassy. A good belgian that starts out like a great winner and falls a little short.

Dark brown color, with a tan-colored head, with a spicy nose of orange peels, dates ,figs fruitiness, chocolate malt, roasted malt, and an alcoholic hint in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate, with a sweet roasted malt, burnt brown sugar, bitter chocolatey note, candied orange peels, dark dried fruits, toffeish accent, with a subtle coffee touch, and an alcoholic strenght well hidden behind his sweet malty character, leading towards a sweet dark fruits fruitiness and a shy bitter hops finish.

Malty as heck, thin, pretty sweet and alcoholic, but saved by some true woodsiness and pepper - otherwise a toffee malt heaven for some.

Pours deep mahogany into a trappist glass. Micro head stays steady on the surface. Plum, pear, cabernet and alcohol aromas. Creamy with upfront prune and raisin and a lasting caramel cherry flambe finish.

Ruddy brown with a quick light tan head. Dark ruby fruits, prunes, grapes, yeasty and bread notes. Taste is plums, light chocolate and caramel, a bit thin but hides the alcohol well with some dark candy sugar notes.

A light beige head tops off a reddish brown body. The nose is malty, some berries, dried fruit, hops. Soft carbonation, medium body, slightly watery. Flavor was a bit coarse and unpleasant.

Bottled: Sweet malty aroma, burnt malt notes. Amber to chestnut brown color. Flavor is first sweet malty. Then light fruity with burnt dried fruit followed by bitter hop.

Brown colour. Nice head, doesn't stay long, though. Wonderful aroma, reminds of some creamy chocolate dessert I had once (can't remember it's name). The taste is a smooth mix of coffee and chocolate. The alcohol is there but stays in the background.
