Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. No head at all, an older sample from Stuffed Sandwich. truly a beer that ages gracefully! Sweetness, malty, but really tastes more like a Red wine, dark red fruits, plain and simple. Delicious!

Dark amber with thin white head. Aroma of sweet malts, caramel, brown sugar and fruit. Taste is sweet and fruity with brown sugar mixed in. Solid Belgian beer.

Fantastic beer, sweet & fruity nose, very inviting, so is the appearance & color, deep brown with a soft & lacing tan head, flavors of port, caramel, sugar & bread, had that signature carbonated bite that’s so enjoyable from Belgian beers, semi-sweet finish with more notes of caramel & yeast, very well balanced & enjoyable, awesome Belgian

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours a dark red brown colour with little head. Aroma is sweet and malty, plus raisins and caramel. Raisins and caramel also in the taste, plus a roast/burnt sweetness and alcohol. Rounded mouthfeel, slight carbonation. Not bad but too sweet for me.

Bu au Festival Bière et Saveur 07 (bouteille). Rousse noisette, petit collet. Arome de caramel et de mélasse malté doux, un peu épicé. Goût de scotch malté, des notes d’épices et de cassonades, un peu réchauffant.

cloudy mahogany pour topped with a fluffy tan head which leaves lots of pillowy lacing. the aroma is similar to an oxidized sherry... sweet with raisins, wood, vanilla, caramel and a sourness. the flavor has vinous qualities as well... raisins, wood and vanilla. it finishes dry and yeasty with an aftertaste of skunky hops? medium to full bodied with a creamy texture and smooth mouth feel. it’s a bit on the sweet side but some age will fix that...

(Bottle, 0.75 l, on 2008-10-18) Dark brown. Hazy. Big white head that lasts long. Chocolate and malts in nose. Full bodied palate with quite a lot of carbonation. Chocolate, malts, some bitterness, hint of salty liquorice and some dried plum in taste. Long lasting aftertaste with malty and bitter flavours.

11.2 oz bottle. Poured a deep chestnut color with a very thin little khaki head. Nutty caramel aroma with some dark fruit sweetness, reminded me a little of a dopplebock aroma since there was little yeasty aroma present. Mild dark fruit and caramel, and very little spice. Alcohol is well-hidden. I was a bit underwhelmed by this considering its high rating. Will revisit soon.
