Commercial Description:
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Pours dark brown with light brown head. Aromas of raisins, figs, candy sugar and licorice. Taste is sweet and malty. Creamy mouthfeel and mild carbonation make this real easy to drink. One of my favorite beers from what is becoming one of my favorite Belgian breweries. The more I drink their beers the more I love them.

Dark red in colour, huge white head. Warm yeasty aroma, can smell the alcohol. Warm blackcurrent and rasin mouthfeel, yeasty/bready flavours.

Bottle pours a slightly hazy garnet color with a decent beige head and very good lace. The aroma is malty, yeasty, raisin, and spicy. The flavor starts sweet, has a dried fruit ditty, a yeast accent, a slight hop blip, and quite nice. The palate is Belgain Strong Ale rich and cleansing. Overall, very nice. It is on my shopping list. Thanks Ryan at Cellars!

Pours cloudy red with a quickly disipating tan head. Clove light fruity red wine, cherry, yeast, brown sugar aroma. Sweet but not cloying. Excellent follow through.Yeast, cheese, oak fruit. A little smoke? Gorgeous.

Bottled. Pours dark brown with a small white head. Aroma is sweet malt, strong sweet belgian yeast, and a hint of bubble gum. Flavor is sweet, smooth malt, slightly buttery, and really reminds me of Westmalle Dubbel. Body had the perfect balance for a belgian.

Caramel coffee nose. Well balanced and on the dry side. Nice finish. Lower carbonation level than most belgians.
