Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Beautiful appearance, well described by ’jbrus’ (see his rating). Lovely sweetish aroma with toffee, dark fruits (plum?), and alcohol. Flavour is initially sweet and fruity/malty followed by a long, malty, and soothingly bitter finish. Definately a wonderful beer!

Good oak colored body with a medium volume light tan head. Coffee, malts, and tea accents are most present in the aroma. Great taste, caramel, toffee, light malts.... this is somewhat similar to the Westy 12. Light alcohol burn in the ending, though it’s mostly sweet.

Bottle. Moderate malt aroma of roasted, caramel and milk chocolate, light herbs for the hops, and moderate barnyard and musty of the yeast, with hints of date, toffee and brown sugar. Head is large, frothy, very light brown with good lacing and is fully lasting. Color is murky dark brown. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy and has a fizzy carbonation. It finishes sticky. This was a very good Belgian Strong Ale, just a bit too much carbonation.

Aroma is of toffee. Has a deep brown body with some beige head and mega particles. Creamy caramel taste with some alcohol. No bitterness in this at all. The yeast break-up really spoilt the appearance and experience of a good tasting beer. Did I get a bad bottle? No bitterness, not even a little?

04/04 0.33 l bottle at Hopdevil, Zagreb. Poured dark reddish brown body with medium brownish head. Quite nice aroma of yeast (banana, orange, dark fruits), fermented grape (wine), caramel and roasted sugar malt. Flavor is fine, dominated mostly by sweet caramel and sourish, pretty simple and leaves watery impression, although definitely not thin bodied. Alcohol is very well hidden. Finish is nice, follows the flavor, with its sweet accent. Although nice beer of course, expected much ore from this one indeed, as it’s favorite style from my favorite non-trappist brewery.

Really nice pour, dark brown with a nice bit of lace. Fruity, with sherry-like nice dryness that sets nicely as a contrast to the molasses malt sweetness.

a welcome and ruby-orange denizen of the snifter, like a liquid cedar mulch, with proud tresses of oatmeal colored lace. lightly hazy with a ghost of micro fine yeast. aggressively arromatic nose pretends to be buttery bananas flambe´ in the half second before the flames consume the fog of alcohol. sizzling sugars and hazelnut apple puree´, a scent for sore noses. perfect carbonation and a cider sweetness are caressed to an elegant finish by the sculpting hands of skilled bitterness. thicker body and longer finish would nudge it to the brink of greatness.

Bottle. Malt, raisins and plums in aroma. Clear deep redbrown colour with soft beige head. Sweet spicy flavour of malt, raisins and discrete hops.
