Wonderful aroma of chocolate, raisin, plum, grape, toffee, fig, and spice. Extremely smooth drinking because of the excellent balance of sweetness, spice and chocolate maltiness. One of my favorite beers. jtheye (12), Roeland Park, Kansas, USA

The write-up on the side of the bottle said that Gouden Carolus would charm me, and it did. This is one of those commercially produced Belgian strong ales that is better than most of the beer produced by the Trappists. I’ll be getting a bomber next time. oberabcbbsok (686), Hoboken, Belgium

Still a perfect beer for tasting. A beer you can save for years. Tasted this year a new one a beer from 1992, a beer from 87 and last but not least a beer from 1976. And still those beers are still wonderfull. A must have taste for everyone. dolemike1 (1129), Jeannette, Pennsylvania, USA

My new favorite beer, ordered on the spur of the moment after the waitress told me they were out of Nocturnum. On tap, deep brownish with a grape colored hue. Light head with lacing. Most amazing flavors i have had in a Belgian, with perfectly sweet grapes, plums, and banana at first, changing abruptly to tones of chocolate and cherry before ending in a sweet , yet lightly drying finish. The taste lingered long after i took a sip. As of now this stands as my new #1 until I can get my hands on my old favorite World Wide stout. obxdude10 (1554), Pottstown, Pennsylvania, USA

Opaqu, dark brown coloured body is topped by generous, large-bubbled, tan head that recedes slowly to lasting cover with some lacing. Fruity esters suggest pears and apples with plenty of chocolate flavour. Fruity esters become wonderfully more pronounced as it warms. Medium body with soft carbonation that tickles the tongue and smooth, creamy mouthfeel. A true pleasure to drink. Bottle (Bieropholie - Feb. 2005).
