Commercial Description:
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Thin yellowish head. Dark brown and red coloring. The aroma is massive with pears and vanilla. There are also dates and black walnuts. The mouthfeel is rich and creamy. The taste is full of prunes and pears with some slightly spicy nutmeg in the finish. Slight paper like finish. Smooth is the best way to describe this winner. Certainly a quality made beer with the alcohol well hidden.

Rich dark brown w/ lots of sediment & big beige head. Fresh bread & bubble gum nose. Chewy. Flavour is complex: dough, fruit, caramel, toffee, nuts.

Best before 07/12/06. Dark brown beer with a ruby tint. Nice sweet fruity and malty aroma, plum/prune, caramel/toffee apple, black pepper and cardamon. Full bodies, malty sweetness, plummy with heavy notes of bread and toast. Lingering yeasty spice, a bit of wheaty tartness and some other fruity acidity. Nice complexity. Tap at Mugs Ale House. I wanted to re-rate this with a few more years on it, so here it is. Deep brown with a ruby tint. Nose is peppery and lightly alcoholic over sweet slightly oxidized malts. Sherryish and pruney with sweet dried fruit in back. Plums and raisins on the nose. The flavour is still very sweet with brown sugar and dried fruits. Slightly alcoholic which helps cut the sweetness, but it’s still too sweet and chewy. I thought that some age would have dried this out, but it doesn’t seem to have done that. It has added some nice sherry character to the sweet maltiness. I don’t think it’s going to improve with any more age on it though.

Clear ruby color, big off-white head. Aroma has grapefruit, raisins and malt. Sweetish balanced palate: sugar, toffee, alcohol. Full-bodied and pleasant.

Reddish brown body, tan head. A good mix of a variety of flavors that make a tasty sweet brew. Give it a shot.

750ml bottle. Pours a dark amber with a thick frothy head. The aroma is very sweet and spicy. The taste is sweet, with a touch of alcohol, but a nice finish that lingers just enough. Excellent beer.

750ml bottle-Pours a deep red mahogany with a nice two finger off white head. It has an aroma of belgian yeast, malts, caramel, sweetness, and a faint tartness. Taste is of malt and yeast along with caramel and raisins on this full bodied brew. Very smooth overall a nice tasting Belgian.
