Commercial Description:
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark orange-brown, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (caramel, molasses, toasted bread, roasted grain/nuts), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of plum, raisin, Bit-O-Honey candy, brown sugar, orange zest. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Solid and reliable, but never quite jaw-dropping. A bit too sweet, but overall quite enjoyable.

Bottle conditioned. Deep copper bronze, moderate thin white head and good condition. Sweet aromas of chocolate, malt and caramel with some oakiness noticable. Good barley wine notes in the mouth with toffee, caramel, silky chocolate and a slight fruitiness. Carbonation is a little over assertive. Finish is quite short and malty sweet.

Hazy brown pour. Average sized vanilla colored head. Aroma of toffee & banana. Tastes very similar to the smell. Not as carbonated as many in this style. An enjoyable brew that is simple and straight forward.

Pours a dark ruby copper with a one to two finger tan head. The nose is warm, sherry like oxidation, mild rusty quality, some spice, dark fruit. The flavor shows dark fruit, rummy, raisins, brown sugar, oxidatoin, yeasty. The palate shows a nice carbonation and spicy warmth.

On draft at the brewery tap, March 2007. Deep, opaque brown with a decent tap head. Great aroma of dark fruit, toffee, marzipan and spice. The flavour inclined towards sweetness, with caramel, preserved fruit and almonds. This excellent beer had a warming alcohol finish.

Poured a dark chestnut brown with a small tan head which dissipated quickly. Candied sugar, roasted malts, and slight alcohol notes on the nose. Tasted of raisins and figs, dark fruits, hint of bitter chocolate. Sweet at first and moving to bitter towards the end of the sip. Medium on the palate and fizzy. Delicious beer!
