Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. Pours deep dark brown with ruby tinges. Beige head with good retention. Aroma of dark fruits (raisins, prunes), berries and chocolate. Very clean deep aroma. Medium-full mouthfeel, smooth finish. Lovely subtle taste of dark fruits (raisins and prunes once again!), chocolate and sweet caramel. Very well balanced, not bitter, but not too sweet. Very nice, and VERY drinkable. ABV is brilliantly masked. Top stuff!

If you ever had to choose a beer to accompany a chocolate cake or creme caramel choose this. The chocolate malts and smooth creaminess in the nose are soft and silky with the contrasting creamy head a real treat. The first sip confirms this as the immediate mouthfeel is warm and chocolatey with the right touch of malt bitternenss. Hop presence is low but for this style right on the money. I vote for a category known as Belgian Porter.

A favorite for both my wife and me. We have had it numerous times from a bottle and several times on draft at the Sharp Edge in Pittsburgh. Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer pours a hazy red/brown with a large tan head. The aroma is malty and very spicy. The flavor is malty with elements of caramel, molasses, nut and chocolate. The flavor is complex and changes as it lingers on the palate.

Murky brown color with a thin light brown head. Complex and appealing aroma of raisin and figs, sugar, malt and bubble guml. Very rich and enjoyable flavor of figs, malt , raisin, bubble gum and alcohol. Full body, liquorous texture, lively carbonation. Amazing stuff, this is truly a dessert in its own.

Pours a heavy brown with copperish edges. The tan-brown head is thick, long lasting and nice lacing. The sweet floaral nose hides a hint of alcohol and grape undertones. Wonderful taste. Very deep. The first whisps of carbonation hit you with rasin and grape tones that blend into a pleasant sweetness. The not too thin. not too thick mouth feel makes the flavors explode. The finish is alcohol but with lingering wine and vanilla flavors. I am really sorry I waited so long to try this. Excellent beer.

On tap at Delirium Café, Göteborg, Sweden. Dark brown with a copper tone, nice fruity aroma. In the mouth, along a nice smooth feeling, a wonderful flavor evolves, complex malts, a touch of wood, chocolate, and with no alcohol coming through. Excellent.

Bottle. YEAH BABY!! Deep cloudy dark brown (poured in all the yeast) with good head and plenty of lace. Smells DIVINE, sweet dark smooth brown sugar, rum and raisins. Tastes even better, smooth, sweet then dry and crisp. Almost perfect palate with a slightly warm and dry alcoholic finish. God this stuff is good; Trios Pistols sans the slightly off bits. YUM!

330 ml. Cloudy, toasted pecan color with a three-finger head that lasts and laces well. Aroma is earthy banana, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted nuts. Flavor is deliciously similar, with a bit of earthy-spiciness, scorched brown sugar, and rum trying to balance. Near medium body is a tad frothy with carbonation, but mostly smooth and dryish. Excellent, malt-rich bomb just like I like ’em!
