Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Last sample in our Belgian tasting! Appears dark brown with a small wispy head. Aroma is an interesting sweet: bubble gum, candi sugar, dark fruit, and caramel. Flavor is just so well-balanced, matching dark ripe fruit (raisin, plum, prunes) with smooth caramel and earthiness. It is tough to distinguish specific flavors because of the balance of it all . . . the finish is mellow, lingering, and entirely pleasant. My favorite amongst a group that included Abbey de Rocs and Unibroue’s Edition 2004, 2005.

Pours brown with amber hues. Foamy, small head, quickly dissipating. Nose is big; brown sugar, caramel and dark fruits, raisin and plum. Taste is dry with caramel and raisin, some plum, touch of apple and pear. Dry wit ha touch of bitter at the end. Great mouthfeel. All around delicious. Highly drinkable

Draft at Rattle ’n Hum. Poured a hazy light orange-golden color. The head was bubbly and white with good retention and lacing. Attractive aroma of yeasty bred dough, mixed baking spices and subdued fruity pastry. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a warming alcohol effect. There was some alcohol flavor accompanied by clove, dark fruits, dark toffee, yeasty bread dough, and hints of banana and flower blossom. Delicious.

Pours a medium golden color with a frothy white head. The aroma is of sweet citrus and honey. There are hints of chocolate and licorice. This beer has a flavor of malty chocolate. The aftertaste is thick and rich and leaves a creamy feeling in the mouth.

Huge beige lasting head. Dark ruby red body with intense carbonation. Strong banana and licorice aroma with spicy coriander notes. Sweet banana, licorice, and chocolate taste with spicy cardamom and cinnamon notes. Considerable alcohol heat. Full body. Smooth mouthfeel. Harmonic and complex. Long dryish aftertaste of various spices with old hop notes. Alcohol notes blend in nicely. Very nice, if maybe a bit sweet. (0.75l bottle, wine monopoly.)
