Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

2005 vintage that was saved to be shared with a dear friend of mine. Kinda exciting to taste a beer brewed 4 years ago to the day! It poured a deep dark brown with a small head retention. Aromas of raisins and molasses. On the palate, a very syrupy mouthfeel where the notes of raisins are still here mixed in with molasses and touches of toffee. As it warms up, notes of cherries and chocolate surface. Very warming and sweet finish. Alcohol is very noticeable - more so than when released. It is quite interesting to taste a beer that is supposed to be able to age for up to 10 years. Later, I would assume that the alcohol would taper off and this beer would become more and more syrupy, inching closer and closer to an old ale or port. Now I know what to do with my 2006 vintage.

Tap at Capones. Pours a murky brown with copper notes and a medium creamy off white head that laced. Aroma and flavor of rich ripe dark fruits, tons of caramel, a little musty, Belgian yeast esters, mixed nuts and sweet grainy malts. Abv well hidden.

On tap at the Lucky Baldwin’s Belgian Fest, this beer pours a dark brown with a thin had. Nice complex aroma and flavor of dark fruit, with some nice spicy notes.

On tap at Capones. Poured a deeper and cloudy/muddy brownish color wih virtually no head. Aromas of dark fruits (prunes and raisins) and fruity. Tastes of the same dark fruitiness (plums and raisins), caramel, toffee, and some lighter spiciness. All around on the sweeter side. Lighter alcohol in the finish.

I’ve been sitting on an ’07 of this for a year and decided to open it up last night to share with my beer cronies. Colour was a dark amber. The nose.... oh sweet spirits of the spice world! Can you say boiled sweets?! The palate... Creamy, melodious, Leopold Stokowski on hydrocodone, faint butyl esters, dark fruits, citron, toffee, fino sherry, and it all comes together for a delightfully warming looooooong finish!

Opened to celebrate my 1st ratebeer.com anniversary. 2008 Vintage. Pour is a clear nice mahogany colored head with a big puffy three fingers of light tan head. Banana, clove aromas, some candi sugar, prunes, and alcohol then some slight sherry like oxidation. Taste is fantastically sweet, smooth, lots of malts, prunes, lightly spicy, raisin and caramel, with a sneaky warming alcohol finish.

Beautiful Belgian strong ale, caramel, pear, banana, clove, toffee, and just a touch of ginger. Perfectly balanced, silky, rich body, and a very long, satisfying aftertaste. This would be in a leaguewith westvleteren if only it were a bit drier. Still, wonderful stuff.
