Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

2009 750mL -> trappist glass. Pours a dark reddish brown with tan head. Head laces slightly. The nose is quite dynamic: molasses and gingerbread followed by orange peel and eventually pecan - top notch. The tasting is quite pleasant milk chocolate and maple syrup - not as complex to the tongue as the nose would suggest. This ale is very sweet and has only a hint of bitter at the finish. The mouthfeel is creamy and syrupy. Overall, this is an excellent belgian brown, though sweeter than I prefer. Cellaring is definitely in order. If only I could get this product unrefrigerated.

Aroma was sweet. Smelled of candy and fruit -- great. The taste of the beer was exceptional and I barely tasted the 11%. Syrupy, fruity, smooth. Might have been a little too sweet, but otherwise, no complaints.

Bomber into glass: dark ruby pour with only slight ring of very light tan head. I guess I didn’t expect it to be so sweet but it was beautifully done -- not too sweet. Good malts, a little yeast and caramelized banana flavor.

Deep brown appearence. Aroma of banana and dirt, rich and deep impact. Tastes of red wine and with a distinct fiery tone.

Vintage 2000 Edition, thnx Skortila!:
Black, brown colored brew. Malty, port-like aroma, not heavy. Flavor is malty, sugary sweet, raisin and a port-like aftertaste. Flavor becomes more and more smooth after warming up. At first it’s a bit thin, then it’s more smooth. Watch out for the left-overs in the bottle. Overall very enjoyable, but not really that special.

Bottle. 2009 vintage. The pour is dark reddish brown with a big off-white head that leaves nice lacings. The smell is big an spot on. Lots of malty aromas of caramel, brown sugar and toffee. Pleasant heavy fruit aromas, yeast and alcohol. The flavor is really sweet. From start to finish this one is all about sweetness - toasty malts, caramel, brown sugar, toffee. Notes of vinous fruits, wood, yeast and grass. The finish has some bitterness to it, more sweetness and notes of alcohol, hops and spices. It has a full body and quite a lot of carbonation, which is welcome here since it lightens the heavy character, if only just a bit. All in all, a complex, balanced and tasty beer. Due to the sweetness, it gets quite demanding after a while.

~Strong sweet alcohol scent with dried cherries, lots of darker sugars, some spices. ~Pours a dark deep amber brown color with small persistant creamy head. ~Sweet raisin and plum flavor, with brown sugar. Very sweet. ~Very thick creamy feel. Full bodied, chewy. ~ Wow! intense brew. Super malty and thick. I normally dont like beers like this. This one is a nice exception.
