Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

2006 Vintage 750ml Caged/Corked Poured into a chalice a brown/mahongy color, very nice carbonation (POP upon opening), nice creamy off-white head, nice creamy sticky lacing and small islands abound. The nose is malty, yeasty, lots of dark fruits, and caramel. The taste is absolutly delicious, sweet, malty, slight yeast tones, figs, raisins, plums, caramel. Nice little chewiness, smooth as hell, alcohol is hidden pretty well, nice warming effect. Full body, complex brew. Very drinkable, AWESOME brew, highly recommended.

tap at monks, philadelphia, pa. pours black with a thin head, me thinks it will be a touch sweet. raisins and and chocolate dominate the nose, with touches of biscuity cookie. taste is sweet, and thick, chocolate cookie. sooooooooooooo so drinkable. slightly sweet though. maybe a bit touch sweet. still good though.

[750 ml bottle from Systembolaget. Bottle from 2008] The aroma is very sticky with alcohol. Beautiful red colour and much foam. The flavour is nice and thick with burnt caramel but a little bit to much alcohol

750 ml caged and corked bottle requiring a wine opener to get the cork off. Bottling from 2006. Poured muddy brown with a tan head that dissipated quickly. Huge rich aroma of dark fruits and sweet malts. Very nice. Sweet flavor full of caramel, figs, raisins, and prunes. Huge alcohol that warms the body. A sipper for sure and very nice.

Pours dark brown with reddish highlights and a large off-white head. Very sweet aroma of malt & dark fruits. Flavor to match with a large caramel and sugar finish with a touch of vanilla.

Pours a slighly hazy dark copper with a big off-white head that shows great retention and lots of lacing. The aroma is dominated by the sweet sugary malts and dark fruits - figs, raisins, grapes. The taste is just as sweet as the aroma would indicate. Huge caramel and candy sugar sweetness with vanilla and dark fruit. The mouthfeel is sticky and the sweetness just coats the mouth from the first sip. This is a very complex and enjoyable Belgian ale.

Dark (brown to black), hazy. Both the aroma and taste is extremely complex. Hints of butter, choclate and soy in the aroma. Flavor is both sweet (fruity) and salty (soy).
