Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

750 mL bottle of 2006 vintage via Lubiere, served at cellar temp. in a tulip glass.

App.: DEEP ruby, clear, large-ish, rocky beige head. Aroma: Tons of fruit – dried dark fruits, cherries, figs, other stone fruits; molasses and licorice, exceedingly sweet nose; spicy from the alcohol; light minty-rootbeer quality. Palate: Thick and syrupy (as nose would suggest), soft effervescence, sticky. Flav.: Piles of gooey, chewy, thick malts; very fruity (the dried fruits and cherries) and sugary but also some roasted malts; Molasses and minty licorice; on swallowing, I’m left with dried apricots and a slight alcohol burn.

This Van de Keizer chap is OK by me!

I was put off by the slightly metallic taste of this one, which was almost too up-front. However, for a Belgian ale, I’m amazed at how rich and malty this beer came out. Lots of sweet plum in there, and woodsy flavours. Great success!

750ml corked brown bottle from Goldorak. 2006 edition, 11% abv. Pours deep red brown colour, fairly clear, tan head recedes quickly leaving a light swirls of tiny bubbles on the surface. The aroma is strongly malty, sweet with raisin, cherry and caramel notes. Carbonation is fine and prickly, body is viscous, clings to glass. Flavour sticks to the tounge, malt forward, caramel and brown sugary malt, with some raisins. Finish starts a little sweet with some fruity notes, then shows some lsigns of alcohol mid tounge then a little yeasty dryness. Great drinkability for a beer of this strength. Rating #700

Aroma is vanilla, malt, light wool, light caramel. Dark cola brown/black, with a tan head and good lacing. Flavor is malt, caramel, anise, dried fruits, slight cheese. Balanced between sweet with and a lightly bitter finish. Creamy rich in the mouth with good carbonation. Very well balanced and very drinkable.

Pretty good. Rich taste, dull aromas, nice aftertaste of sweet fruits and spices. Not a session beer, but can be enjoyed thoroughly in one sitting.

Bouteille 2006, 750ml.
