Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

[2000 vintage] The aroma is sweet with notes of wood, yeast, plums, apples and other fruits - lovely complex. The color is redbrown but it has no head. The flavor is sweet and fruity and is very powerful - a fine beer.

(Bottle 75 cl) Vintage 1999 at 8,5% ABV. I bought this at the brewery at the day of it’s release. Great show with some sort of reenactment of the arrival of Keizer Karel in Mechelen. Wonder if that happens every year at this beers release or if was a one off? Anyways, this is an excellent brew. Dark brown with a huge, frothy, light-brown head. Extremely full-bodied, full of good ingredients. Loads of roasted malt with notes of syrup and dried fruits - dates in particular. Sweetness indeed, but more fruity and fresh - which is unusual for it’s kind. a great beer indeed. 070500

75 cL bottle, Kerstbierfestival 2007 in Essen/Belgium. Pours deep amber, clear and with no head. Dried fruit and with a mild yeast note, malty aswell. Winous. Flavour is sweet and with notes of rainsins and other dried fruit goodies, lovely. Nicely lingering into the finish with a sweet caramel malt and fruity note.

Bottled, 2001 vintage. Thanks Bov!
Deep ruby, beige head. Fruity bubblegum aroma. Richly malty with dense soft mouthfeel. Relatively dry. Complex and very flavourful, notes of caramel and disturbing green apples. A balanced Belgian beer, playing in the super premium league.

Bottle. Vintage 2001. Dark brown color with almost no head. Malty and sweet with notes of dark fruit, chocolate, caramel and alcohol. Very rich in flavour. Vintage 2002. Dark brown color with almost no head. Malty and sweet with notes of dark fruit, chocolate, caramel and alcohol. Very rich in flavour just a little younger in the tast. 2005 Same as 2002 but no as strong and mature. Gets very good when you can keep it in your celler.

Bottled (2002, 8,5%). Hazy brown colour, small beige head. Alcohol, malts, caramel. Flavour sweet caramellish malty with hints of plum, alcohol a bit bitterness. Quite complex to both aroma and flavour.
