Commercial Description:
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Pours a light brown with a thin head. Aroma is yeast, dark fruits, cherry twizzlers. Sweet maltiness in the taste, some caramel, cherries, and some toffee. This is complex and rich.

This beer pours a dark brown almost black with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. The aromas are light citrus and dough. The flavor is sweet and yeasty and not too dry. This was a pleasure to drink. Cheers!

2008 bottle. Crap, I thought this was a quad. Dark reddish brown pour with off white, whispy head. Brown sugar, raisin, belgian yeast, candi sugar. Flavor is pruney, grapey, caramel, some dates. A bit of Belgian yeast and maybe a touch of spice. A bit vinous. Syrupy mouthfeel with some nice carbonation. Finishes sweet. Pretty decent belgian,

2009 batch, 750 ml bottle, 11/27/09. Pours dark brown with ruby highlights, with light tan head. Not a lot of head retention. Odor is plums, almost grape juice. Slight (but not offensive) green apple aroma. Hits the mouth sweet and grapey. Definitely some belgian candy syrup flavor. Plenty carbonated, but not to the extreme like some of this style. Mouthfeel is very smooth – one of the best, most surprising features of this beer, actually. No metallic flavor, alcohol is very well hidden, no astringency. Overall, I’d say this beer is essentially flawless, though a little one-dimensional with the dark fruity sweetness. Reminds me a lot of a Bernardus Abt 12, although not as dry. This beer was young. It is going to age very well.

2008 bottle. A huge tan head causes significant delay in enjoying this beer. Pour is a very cloudy dark brown that is almost porter a color. A complex aroma of spice, dark fruit, vinous notes, and cherry wood. Flavor is delicious. Complex fruit with both dark and tropical, alcohol, spices, sweetness and more sweetness. This was a very tasty beer for a beer drinker with a sweet tooth (like myself). However, it would have been a great beer to share. By the end of the 750 the sweet flavor had grown stale.

The first thing I noticed about the 2007 version of this beer is the alcohol notes on the aroma. It wasn’t offensive, but definitely present. The beer pours a dark amber/brown that shines red in the glass without much head. With the alcohol, the beer has a fresh sweet caramel nose with a slight date smell. The taste mirrors the aroma and as the beer warms up, more alcohol notes are noticeable in the taste. Good beer. And, if I were to have the pleasure of drinking this beer again, I would drink it cold!
