Commercial Description:
Origin: Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor completes the taste pallet of the gamma Carolus-beers. Name: "Hopsinjoor" is a wordplay to for one thing the several hops which were used, and on the other hand the typical character of Mechelen of Gouden Carolus: the figure "opsinjoor" is intertwined with the history of Mechelen (see: www.opsinjoorke.be/Opsinjoorke/opsinjoor.htm). Kind of hops: 4 types of hops are used: Golding, Spalt, Hallertau and Saaz. These hops were fractioned at several times in the cooking process in order to keep a maximum of aroma. Regarding to taste we can say that the beer has a gentle, but nevertheless bitter aftertaste. Gold-yellow colour. Hoppy aroma.

Pours slightly hazy yellow with a gigantic head, loads of lacing. Aroma of alcohol, yeast, apricots, bread, citrus, a bit funky. The same notes returns in the flavor, along with a long bitter hop bite in the end. It’s quite warming too. Light to medium body, quite sparkly.

cloudy medium gold with very foamy white head. Very zesty (lime, orange) aroma, punctuated with melon rind, light woodsiness. A pleasant hop bouquet. Highly carbonated, quite fizzy, and finishes with some yeasty stickiness. Lots of fruity grain kicking around. Mainly, though, lots of rind and zest flavors, typical of Belgian-style hoppy beer, executed well.

Bottle, Dulle Griet Ghent. Pours hazy blond with an excellent nice creamy white head, good lacing. Hoppy spicy nose, bananapeel. Fresh hops, herbal. Well balanced flavors. Creamy spritzy palate. Good beer. Lacks some aroma hops.

Pours light honey gold with a huge, chunky off white head that has amazing retention and leaves big, chunky lacing. Aroma is yeasty bread, lots of grass, lime, citrus blossoms, lots of bready yeast, wet limestone and some earthy notes. Flavor is sweet yeasty bread rolls, lemon and lime rinds, black pepper, ginger, some herbal notes and a sweet malt, bell pepper, bitter herbal hop finish. Palate is medium body with a slightly syrupy, slick entry and slightly dry finish. Pretty good stuff, but the flavors just don’t meld quite right.

pours nice straw yellow color with small head. very bitter fore- and aftertaste, with a lot of typical belgain yeastieness. this would be a much better beer if the were more in the flavor and aroma hop dept.

Pours golden yellow with a big snow white. Nose is not quite what i expected, almost pils like in terms of honey malt sweetness and spicy/floral noble hops. Palate is more in line with what i expected, being a belgian ipa. Some mild citrus & apricot/peach pops up but plays second fiddle to the spicy & floral noble hops that dominate the mid palate and the finish. High abv almost non-existent. Overall a nice, robust alternative to a pils but not quite what i was expecting. Regardless, easy to see why this is rated quite highly.

BCTC. Pours a milky light golden amber with a thin white head. Musky hop aromas. Tangy and woody. Remarkably dry.

11.2 ounce bottle from the Whole Foods in Hillcrest ($4.99). Pours a murky dark apricot color with a gigantic and frothy white head that lasts a long time and leaves great lacing. Really, it took quite a while to pour this into the tulip glass. Aroma of bready malts, yeast, and some fruity esters (banana, lights citrus). Smells more like a regular Belgian ale -- not a whole lot of discernible hops in the nose. But the hops are very noticeable in the taste where it imparts a bitter herbal kind of flavor (which is noticeably different from the hoppy beers here in California). Flavor also includes tart lemon and a hint of spice. Finish is dry and rather bitter.
