Aromas are spicy, of carmel, and figs or raisins. The taste is about the same. A very full beer. wolfenstein62 (9), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 2, 2010 Deep Brown in color with a thick, frothy beige head. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 2, 2010 Deep ruby/brown colour with a big head that largely stayed the course. Aroma of spices and drak fruit . Tasted sweet, hints of toffee, caramel, vanilla, even tobacco. Wonderful spices and fruit tastes. Little bitter at the finish with a big burn but didn’t really have a lastin g adftertaste. Full bodied. A very complex beer and pretty well balabnced. Took me a few sips to get into it but soon appreciated its brilliance. Made it a ’merry’ Christmas alright! durhambeer (1242), Durham, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 1, 2010 Draft pour from the lovely Thirsty Monk in Asheville. Pours gorgeous dark brown with huge creamy beige head. Nose of slight bananas, but more figs and raisins and -- WOW -- a huge licorice flavor. But not all spice; more the spice of anise, but the fruitiness of good licorice as well. I have never been a huge licorice fan, but this was the perfect flavor. Really, really nice. Great palate; just a wonderful beer overall. brenn79 (217), Idaho, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 1, 2010 750 Bottle corked- Pours deep brown with average lacing and little head, aroma is bananas and alcohol. The flavor is sweet sugar, bananas, alcohol, of all the Belgian brews of this Christmas Eve night, St. Bernardus Abt 12 was by far the best, although you can not go wrong with a Belgium beer (for the most part). monsieurlupe (6), sheffield, England does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 31, 2009 On draught at Marble Arch, Manchester. Strong aroma of cherry drops (sweets). Very dark with tanned, long lasting head. Couldn’t stop myself from swirling and smelling this beer all the way to the end. Lots of licorice and other spices to taste. Merry Christmas indeed! Soonah (980), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 30, 2009 Poured brown and hazy into my Chimay glass with a thin tan layer of foam and decent lacing. The aroma was malt, yeast and tons of "winter" spice like cinnamon and clove. The flavor was dark fruits, rich malts and dry cinnamon. Spices almost got distracting. Nice warming rush of alcohol towards the end. Medium bodied and well carbonated. Just OK. beerchugger (309), Colorado, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 29, 2009 Pours a very deep and dark red giving up hues of red only when held up to a light. A bit boozy in the nose. Typical aromas of dark rich fruits and sweet malty molasses. But there’s a bit of chocolate at the end of the aroma. Perhaps a touch of caramel as well. It’s grainy initially, but very rich indeed giving flavors of sweet molasses, candied sugar, dark plums, and a heavy chocolate taste on the palate. The finish is a touch oily but rahter long on the tongue. A rather complex beer but enjoyable at every level.
