Super frothy leaving behind tons of sticky resin on the glass. Piney and floral, with noticeable hops and grapefruit on the nnose. Initially caramel, with hops again and creamy well integrated malty finish. bitbucket (2036), Kirkland, Washington, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 27, 2009 Bottle at Beer:30. Pours clear brown with a rough orange head. Aroma of toffee, grapefruit and grass. Medium body and light carbonation. Sweet (lots of Crystal 80?) taste with backed with dry earthy hops. Not really what I was expecting in an ESB, but still a tasty beer. natejgood (190), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 3, 2009 Pours a clear medium brown with a frothy tan head that laces the sides of the glass nicely. The aroma is hoppy and bitter with hints of grass and citrus. The flavor was much less hoppy and more malty than I was expecting based on the aroma. The beer is a little fuzzy in the mouth, but isn’t unpleasant to drink. I think this beer could use a little more bitter and a little less sweet. BeerBelcher (945), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 5/5 | 10/20 | Jan 31, 2009 I ordered this because it was on-cask at Roman’s. I’ve seen it before in bottles and passed it up, as ESBs are not the most exciting style in the world to me. But being on the beer engine upped the interesting factor to me enough to order. And it was OK, but hardly the daunting flavor challenge in the commercial description of the beer.
Body was a dark but brilliant copper. Off the beer engine, head was silky and perfect. Aroma was pretty faint; I got some English style hoppiness (East Kent Golding? Fuggles?). Flavor was a heavy shot of maltiness, not tremendously balanced with hops. Some mettalic, coppery flavor. OK, but not the high point of my beer drinking day.
This was OK, but at a place like Roman’s, it wouldn’t be in the first 5 beers I’d recommend. CaryTheDude (1113), Longmont, Colorado, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 26, 2009 Crushed with Jakebra. Nice sweet malts and scotchiness on the nose. Flavor is too poopy, but somehow becomes a little bit appealing in there, with a nice hop backbone showing through once it warms up. Not quite sexy, but do-able. fdr137 (32), , New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 20, 2009 12 oz bottle. Poured a dark brown with considerable haze, and thin light brown/cream head. Nose is hops with a slight earthy malt scent. Toasty malt flavor with a solid hops, and some other coffee/toffee/caramel flavor. Decent. timmy300 (199), bloomington, Illinois, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 18, 2009 actually a really big beer for the diminutive 5.5 abv flavor is very sharp and a little astringent. Snojerk321 (2020), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 10, 2009 12oz bottle from BevMo Mission Valley. Pours a deep clear amber with a ruby hue. A small beige head left some lacing. Nose had aromas of fresh hops and toasted malts. Flavor was malty with a light hop bitterness. One of the better ESB’s I’ve ever encountered.
